Twice Told Tales FORTY YEARS AGO ' (Taken from the files of March 22, 1934) Twenty-eight years ago in March, 1906, Fox River Camp, No. 3251, R.N.A. was organized and the observance of this date has been an annual event in the history of the camp. Easter is but a little more than a week away. Mrs. C.F. Pich on Riverside drive at Pearl street is showing a fine selection of up-to-the minute styles which she has just received from D.B. Fisk and Co. John Meurer, 56 years old, of Lake Shore drive, Chicago, died at his recently acquired home in Diedrick's subdivision on Fox River, McHenry, Friday night after a week's illness of pneumonia. McHenry business houses will close on Good Friday, March 30, between the hours of 12 noon and 3 p.m. The tavern and dining room at the Oak Park hotel, Pistakee Bay, was bombed this Thur sday morning about 2:15 o'clock, almost completely wrecking the building and causing considerable damage to the hotel. The big hotel is one of the oldest and best known summer resorts in this section of the country and is owned by Joe Mertes. The Riverside Dairy is inaugurating the use of new and modern milk bottles this week. This new bottle is known as "the cream top" bottle and with the spoon separator will be furnished by Fred Ferwerda of the Riverside dairy. Mr. Ferwerda has supplied McHenry and vicinity with milk for many years getting his supply from local farmers. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of March 24, 1949) McHenry's oldest marriage, one which was solemnized more than sixty-one years ago in this city, was broken by death March 18 when William Tesch, 85, passed away at his home on the corner of Main and Green streets. Homer FitzGerald, owner of the FitzGerald's Men's Shop on south Green street, had taken his daughter to the local theater about 8 o'clock on Thursday night and after leaving her there entered his place of business nearby. Immediately he noticed a great deal of clothing missing from the store, he reported it to police officer Elmer Murphy, on duty at the time. They discovered the rear door open and two piles of neatly stacked suits on the ground amounting to nearly $8,000. Once again congratulations to Mrs. Alma Thomas, who on Tuesday, March 22, observed her ninety-third birthday an niversary. Edmund Wirfs who has been employed in Rockford for the past several years, has returned to McHenry and has purchased the Matchen Body Shop on Borden street. The business will be known as the McHenry Auto Body Service. A new name has been added to the professional roster of McHenry in the person of Dr. Martin R. Stone, chiropractor, with offices at the corner of Green and Elm streets in the Pries building. Riverview Camp R.N.A. held a party in honor of the thirty- eighth anniversary special guests at the party were Charter Members and past oracles, Mrs. Agnes Wentworth Gilley received a safety year pen for membership. The lucky five would get to see all the mysterious machinery in the factory where the world's most wonderful candy was made. And those five children were Augustus Gloop, a fat pig of a boy who would eat anything he could get his hands and teeth on; Veruca Salt, a spoiled little rich girl who screamed until she was bought her heart's latest delight; Violet Beauregarde, the world's champion gum chewer who was destined for a sticky end; Mike Teavee, a smart aleck who was addicted to television; and Charlie Bucket, hero, who was honest, obedient, loyal, trustworthy, brave good, kind and starving. What happens when these five children meet the famous Mr. Willy Wonka? What happens when they pass through the big factory doors? What happens when they come upon the unknown factory workers who throw very thin shadows on the windows and talk in rhyme? What happens when one by one, the children disobey Mr. Wonka's orders? That, dear reader, is the substance of this uproarious morality talk by the world renowned storyteller, Roald Dahl. Mrs. D.W. Swetman, Children's librarian SRVE UP TO $200.00 50 SO. YDS.
