Got down there and found out that is where the White Sox are in training. (That's the way we tell it). Discovered a CUB POWER badge in our belongings, but didn't see the Cub cap until it was time to unpack. Must warn our wife not to mingle with certain people. Visited the Old Heidelberg Castle one evening and were ushered to a table just inches from LeRoy and Arlene Hettermann of Arlington, Va. LeRoy grew up in Johnsburg and is Alvina's first cousin. He was a pilot for Uncle Sam, then took to the friendly skies for United. With the Hettermanns was a sociable couple, John and Ann Tankait. With that German band and gay dancing at 01 Heidelberg, it was about like Bimbo's for visiting. Friends and former Chicago neighbors of our sister Catherine and brother-in-law George Miller (Main Street) really made our trip pleasurable. George and "Les" Kelly now make their home in Sarasota. George Kelly watches all the Sox ball games while Les (Miss Chamber of Commerce) watches Sarasota. She knows that city from one end to the other and was very gracious in showing us the sights. Saw a gal at church that looked like our McHenry high classmate Bertha Schiessle Jensen. Looked enough like Bertha to be a sister if Bertha had a sister. Of course we saw some ball games. Never mind that the Sox didn't win 'em all. Looked up Terry Forster the first thing - our All-American choice. Without asking for it, Terry had several Soxers autograph a baseball for us to take home as a keepsake. The Kansas City Royals and Pittsburgh Pirates are strong teams and should be near the top in their respective leagues all season. They weren't kind to our Sox. The most complete ball player we saw was Ken Henderson. He can do it all. Always thought his injury last year was the hardest blow of all to Sox chances. Watching a game one day brought back memories of times when the House of David and Colored Giants baseball teams invaded small towns and attracted crowds from miles around. Times have changed. Must thank Girl Friday Marie for putting the sport page together in our absence. Of course, you read Walt Freund's baseball columns. We think they were great. Sort of a hard act for us to follow. We'll have to try a little harder. 'Twas a nice vacation. The best part of it all was getting back to McHenry and our own home. Later my father got a 2-14" bottom plow with which we used four horses. Boy, we were getting up in the world. My folks sold eggs for 12 and 154 a dozen. Father sold hogs for $3.00 p«r hundred. Compare with prices today! In the winter, we were not so busy, so I got a job in a printing shop at 50$ per day. In six months I was due a raise to 60(, but I went back on the farm. Everything was done by hand. This column would not hold all the things I could tell about those good old days. But, from my time with a walking plow to now -- with a 4-bottom all tubber trac­ tor, with closed cab, I could plow with a white shirt on and not get it dirty. I remember I slept in an old log house. Mother washed on a washboard, carried water five or six hundred feet. She made her own washing soap. With a flock of lettermen returning, plus the addition of some newcomers the track outlook at McHenry is indeed very bright. This year's squad should have some depth, that has been lacking in former years. In the spring he has Ev Klapperich conference and district champion returning, along with newcomer Dave Dulberg, and sophomore Brian Nuss. Mike Cajthaml should have a banner season in the high jump. Rick Freund and George Hansen along with Scott Freund should be more than enough to take care of the pole vault. Mike Thornton a returning letterman in the ^eights, along with Neal Barry and Scott Nimsgern. ** In the distances he has John Mclnerney, John Barnings, Joe Meyer, Tim Talbot, Kevin Wynveen. In the hurdles he has Brian Nuss, Dave Nugent, and Ron Stine. In the 440, Roger Mroz, along with some promising sophomores. In the long jump it will be Dulberg, Klapperich and Nuss. In a statement issued to the International Cheerleading Foundation, the Governor has called attention to this uniquely-American tradition that is now observing its 75th anniversary. During the dates above, hundreds of junior and senior high school cheerleaders will have the opportunity to attend the 8th annual summer clinic and spirit school held by the ICF on the campus of the University of Illinois, Champaign. There, special historical observances will be held to pay honor to cheerleading, an activity founded inn 1898-99 at the University of Minnesota. "Our cheerleaders guide America's millions of high School and college students in die morale support of school sports, " explains the Governor in his statement. "I urge all Illinois citizens to join me during Cheerleaders' Week in recognizing the merits of the cheerleaders' tasks and accomplishments." The weather this spring has put a damper on practice, but one consolation is that this will be the last spring that the golfers will have to worry about the weather. Starting next fall, the I.H.S.A. has approved golf as a fall sport. Availability of golf courses in the spring has been a major concern for the past several years. With the courses in better shape, and with nice fall weather, high school golf should get a big boost starting next fall. Last year's number one golfer Chuck Jesky along with 33 other boys are out for Coach Cuda's team this year. Northern Mini Bowmen News MARCH MEETING REPORT Four new members were greeted at the Northern Illini Bowmen Club meeting in March, held at McHenry Legion. Howard & Patricia Westerman of 906 Stueben Rd., McHenry are new members as are their 5 children. Robert and Greg Westerman also have their bows and will be in competition as soon as they have 2 registered shoots to classify. Phil Anderson of Wheeling and Joe Rambo of Buffalo Grove also will be active members of the McHenry bases archery club. Dick John of McHenry again volunteered to be Target Chairman with the assistance of the 2 new members, Phil and Joe. John Zawaski of Oak Park volunteered to be Trophy Chairman. Earl Bird of Wauconda will be Range Captain. President, Bob Anderson's wife Carol of Lake Villa volunteered as Food Chairman and Irene Trumble volunteered" as Publicity Chairman. Only one office it left to be filled, that of Social Chairman. April 7th, next Sunday will be a Club Shoot. NIB invites all interested archers out to their range on Draper Road, just a mile west of McHenry, to shoot with them and look over their 28 Field target Archery Range. Bows performed well but icy fingers took a tole scorewise. Sixty archers braved the subfreezing temperatures to shoot the Northern Illini Bowmen's Slush Shoot on March 24th. Sun, snow, wind and an early morning temperature reported to be not above zero were countered with a roaring bonfire, hot chili and warm clothes plus an archer's love of the out-of-doors. High men's score was shot by Tim Madden with a 445, shooting with fingers as was high women's score of 342 by Irene Trumble winning trophies in free style using a sight. David Brunswick of McHenry shot a high of 214 taking a trophy in Cubs. Other highs in their style of shooting were trophy winners, Gary Heimendinger with 387 using a release & shooting with the sight. Barebow high was a 302 by Kenneth Boland and Bowhunter, Bob Turner with 365. Women's barebow high was shot by Ann Martin with 174 and a 161 by Beverly Wichert in Women Bowhunter division. With the above winners eliminated, all other shooters were placed in Flights with the winners as follows: 1st Flight, Urban Lindqvist with 397, Dave Smith 373, Jim O'Donnell 311. 2nd Flight 1st place trophy to Joe Moskay 262, Robben Mueller 246 and Mickey Heffernan 235. 3rd Flight winners were: Shirl Heffernan 159, Glen Carlson 155, J.A. Penile 155. Unclassified flight was won by Mike Lower 159, Phil Anderson 147 and Dick John 102. Cubs flight was won by Wm. Peckham 192, 2nd place medal to Brian Brunswick 123 and 3rd by Joey Raven with 98, latter two youths are from McHenry.
