PAGE 6 - PLAINDEALER-FRIDAY. APRIL 5, 1974 * POSTPONE HORSE SHOW The Spring Grove Saddle club' finds it necessary to cancel its horse show scheduled for April 7 at Horse Head arena near Twin Lakes, Wis. It will be rescheduled in May. WL EARL WALSH So I Hear SPORTS EDITOR. Warrior Nine Defeats Carmel In Opener Play ball! The season opens this week with all the whoopla and heartaches of every season. The heartaches hit those players who worked hard, thought they had a good showing in spring training, then get the pink slip and transportation back to the minors. Baseball and other sports are now big business. For many years we banished that thought from our mind, but can no longer do so. Hie owners were always looked upon as the demons. Now the players are organized and hire people to represent them in negotiations. It's money, my friend, money. Money has long been known as the root of all evil. In spite of that, most of us would like more roots. Bart Johnson is mighty sad about being sent down the river by the White Sox. We saw him pitch last week and saw him throw only two real fast balls in six innings. He did go through five scoreless innings before getting bombed. He was a fireball thrower and a great prospect two years ago. Hope he comes back. Milt Pappas is disenchanted with the Cubs who seem to have no respect for old age. Pappas needs only one more victory to make it 100 in the National League. He has 110 wins in the American League. We thought the Cubs would keep him, but that big salary must have been an issue. Big business again. If those big salaries are correct in pro basketball and football, we think somebody is nutty. Reminds us of the story about a Senator who said to a fellow law maker, "You spend a billion here, a billion there, and the first thing you know it adds up." Everybody is ignorant - only on different subjects. -WILL ROGERS By Dick Rabbitt Coach Ken Swanson's McHenry High Warriors opened their baseball season Monday with a 7 to 2 win over Carmel of Mundelein. The Warriors won the game in the first two innings as they put across 6 of their 7 runs in these two frames. Hie local nine managed to gather in 10 hits in the opener. Bob Dobbertin, McHenry's fine receiver, led the attack with a perfect day at the plate 3 for 3. Doug Freund had two hits. Steve Himpelmann, the first of three pitchers, was the winner. By Dick Rabbitt Larkin of Elgin defeated the McHenry High Warriors Tuesday afternoon by a score of 9 to 4. Wickencamp was the starting and losing pitcher for the local nine. Eight McHenry errors proved the downfall of the Warriors. They managed to get wily 3 hits. On the other hand Larkin managed to get 10 hits off of three McHenry hurlers. Governor's Aid Sought By Legislators Opposing RTA Innings 1234567r he Larkin 311*00049 10 1 M c H e n r y 1 0 0 0 0 0 3 4 3 8 Governor Daniel Walker has been asked by State Senator Jack Schaffer (R) and State Rep. Thomas Hanahan (D) both of McHenry county, to meet with a Bi-partisan Citizens group from McHenry county who wish to gain his support for legislation to remove McHenry county from the Regional Transit Authority. In a letter dated March 26, Schaffer and Hanahan have requested Governor Walker to allow a group of McHenry County board members, mayors, political leaders and interested citizens of both political parties to meet with him so that the McHenry county group can present its side of the RTA issue. The opening paragraph of the letter to Governor Walker states: "On March 19 the residents of McHenry county voted over 10 to 1 against a Regional Transit Authority. This tremendous margin, coupled with a record turnout, is a certain indicator of an extreme degree of reservation and unhappiness with the inclusion of McHenry county in the RTA. This extremely strong feeling transcended party lines and philosophical differences. In the coming spring session of the General Assembly, there will be attempts to amend the RTA proposal to allow counties such as McHenry to vote learning how to swim. Y-don't you start on the right track this spring and prepare your family for the lake activities by learning the proper techniques involved in swimming. Lessons are for all ages and all abilities, stop by or call the Lake Region YMCA for more information at 459-4455. themselves out of the RTA prior to January, 1975. Both of us feel that these attempts are doomed to failure without your support." Schaffer and Hanahan feel there may be votes enough in the General Assembly to pass the legislation needed to allow McHenry county out of the RTA but are convinced that there are nowhere near enough votes to over-ride a gubernatorial veto; therefore, Governor Walker's support is absolutely essential. The bi-partisan group has requested to meet with the Governor in either Springfield or Chicago. Senator Schaffer and Rep. Hanahan, have requested any McHenry county citizen interested in participating in the meeting to contact Senator Schaffer's office at 56 North Williams street, Crystal Lake, telephone 455-0309.
