STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD SSI Alert Project To Be Launched This Week The SSI Alert project is being launched this week in McHenry county with the opening of an office in Room 111, McHenry county court house, Woodstock, and the appointment of Mrs. Bertha Tammeus as director of the volunteer project. Volunteers will be needed for every neighborhood in the county, including rural areas. "Many people giving a little time will get the job done," says Mrs. Tammeus. Anyone who wishes to serve as a volunteer or who knows of any individual, adult or child, who may qualify for the benefits of SSI should phone the SSI Alert office "at 815-338-3060 from 9-5 Monday through Friday. William Biscomb is manager of the Woodstock office, which is a branch of the Waukegan SSA office. Favored Spot Of British Is Seen By Tourists ANTIGUA (trip taken by Hugh Kirk) Antigua is an old time favored spot of the British who found it a great place to hide their fleet in the sailing days. It is one of the leeward islands, meaning it is out of the path of the trade winds. It has a port with a narrow opening that widens inside and then trims off something like a river. It turns as it goes inland and is well sheltered by mountainous hills. On a point within the harbor where the main entry channel is still in view, the British built a naval base fort a couple of centuries ago. ° The fort is completely equipped for handling and repairing ships. It has many buildings, all of which may be entered by visitors. Men are seen here with hand tools shaping out huge fine masts and other ship parts. Lord Nelson was in command here and kept his fleet in the FREUND CONSTRUCTION GENERAL CONTRACTOR QUALITY WORKMANSHIP AT FREUND CONST. Much elegance is to be found in some of the buildings that were the quarters of some rather high dignitaries 6( British rank of yesteryear. '*•;' The driver of the touring bus has much to do with the way one appreciates an island. On Antigua, the driver appeared to be a field hand. He didn't say much and the traveler found himself asking questions, many of which were ignored. He pointed out an English church but only after the tourists had passed the historical landmark. There were a number of old stone round towers and the driver was finally persuaded to stop at one after several requests to stop for a picture. These towers, it seemed, provided the power through windmills to drive the presses for the sugar cane centuries ago. This ride was the highest priced one anywhere. When the travelers returned to the port gates, the driver asked for a tip which no one gave him in spite of his request. He was extremely provoked and let them know it. They hoped he would figure out why he was not given a material gratuity. HAPPINESS IS: FINDING WHAT YOU WANT IN THE PLAINDEALER'S CLASSIFIED WANT AD SECTION TODAY !!!!
