Tournament Crowned NEW CHAMPIONS IN EVERY DIVISION The Catholic Order of Foresters State Basketball Tourney drew large crowds to close its 28th Annual Event. Fans from as far west as the Mississippi River joined the huge hometown crowds, from McHenry and Johnsburg, to watch and cheer their favorites to division championships. Hie 34 team tourney was narrowed to 10 teams the previous two Sundays in what Fred Meyer, veteran tournament director, described as the largest and best balanced competition in C.O.F tournament history. Championship Sunday was highlighted with Dixieland entertainment, championship and all-star trophy presentations followed by the induction of Ave new members into the Forester Hall of Fame. Following the presentation, an informal gathering was held at the Johnsburg Community Club for all past and present Hall of Famers, tournament committee chairmen, and C.O.F. officers and their wives. To honor the Hall of Famers, a cake was presented to the men with all their names inscribed on the face. Mike Winter's was the starting and winning pitcher. He was relieved by Terry Gough, Pat Stanek, and Dave Wickencamp. Kevin Worm and Bob Dobbertin each had 2 hits for the Warriors. I On Tuesday theyH opened North Suburban Conference play with a win over the Crystal Lake Tigers. The score was 6 to 5. Ben Himplemann went all the way for the win. The turn-outs for most squads is relatively small as only 25 tracksters reported for action and only 15 baseball players greeted new head coach, Bob Bowman. Bud Grover's golfers are hopeful of a strong season and should provide extremely tough competition for all opponents. Grover's sophomore team captured the Suburban Catholic Conference crown last year at Crystal Woods and all the boys on that winning team are returning for action. Leading candidates for the top spots on the golf squad are lettermen Dave Bolger, John Craig, Dave Jackson, and Ray Steege. Craig and Jackson figure to battle for the number one spot while" Bolger and Steege prtmde excellent depth. Other candidates are Scott Anderson. Mark Thompson, and sophomores Tom Frank, Tim Frenzer, Jeff Grover, Scott Lamos, Rick Leisten, and Mark Miller. Head track coach, Lou Hartlieb, greeted only 25 track and field prospects, but he is encouraged with the attitude and spirit of his small squad. Letterman returning are Gary Gilpin (shot and discus), John Sheahan (880 and mile), and Sam Anderson (jumping events). The small turn-out will especially hurt the Hurricanes as two additional events have been added to competition (440 relay and triple jump). Lack of depth is certainly a factor. Other tracksters are Mark Aiello (distance events), Scott Olson (440), Chuck Martina (weight events), and John Idstein and Rick Landre (hurdles).Sophomores who have looked good in workouts are Mark Saladin, John Dwyer, Pat Stemper, Larry Sullivan, John Orso, Fred Holzrichter, Shawn DeWane, Chris Crowley and Dan Knox. Marian's new baseball coach, Bob Bowman, has seven returning lettermen and leading candidates are most valuable (1972 and 1973) A1 May who pitches and plays centerfield. Other lettermen are Marty Palmer, Mike Pierce, Jack Sebesta, Tom Cote', Tom Cocoran and Mark Davis. Other candidates are Brian Duffy, Jim Sabatino, and Juniors Mitch Przetacznik, Marty Patterson, Andy McLaughlin, A1 Burger and Gary Talaga. The hardball squad has been working out inside and has been hampered by the bad weather. "We are concentrating on fundamentals of play at all positions and waiting to get outside so that we can execute and polish off our throwing and batting skills," said Bowman. Marian dropped their opener to Boylan 4-1 as Burger gave a good five innings on the mound.Marian's next action is against Benet on April 16. Hope they win one soon or life is going to be unbearable for us around this area. Seems everybody saw Hank Aaron hit that No. 715 to beat Babe Ruth's home run record. Hammerin' Hank is a great credit to the game. They said Babe Ruth's record would never be broken. Now some super bomber may come along to shoot for Aaron's record. With hockey and basketball still on the scene, it keeps a fellow busy keeping track of the action. The Stanley Cup race is great, but now they are going to bump Lawrence Welk off the air next Sunday night. Sucha, business!. Why can't they reschedule the Welk show and let him bump one of those we-c an-do-without programs? The grass is getting green in our yard. Can't wait for those beautiful dandelions to come along. Tommy Ludwig's 7th inning 3 run homer over the fence provided the margin of victory. Southpaw Bill Jaskowiak went the distance for the win. The crafty lefthander allowed only 4 hits in his first start of the season. On Tuesday the sophs lost a close game to the Crystal Lake sophs by a score of 2 to 0. Tommy Ludwig went the distance and took the loss, allowing only 5 hits. The sophs managed only 3 hits off Howie, the Crystal Lake pitcher. The frosh and sophomores play Lake Forest here tomorrow in a doubleheader starting at 10:30 A.M.
