The twenty participants will attend nursing classes at Elgin Community college, while taking general education and nursing-related courses at MCC. McCray, National Clothing Appeal administrator. "The world's needs have changed, and Church World Service, through its clothing appeal and through CROP, its fund-raising and commodity-securing arm, is adjusting to those changes." Overseas needs have changed greatly from the time when CWS first began to send its fleet of trucks down the nation's highways seeking to collect as much as 10 million pounds of used clothing in a year. In those days, most of the clothing went to Europe and warm winter wraps were much in demand. Now the scene is the tropics, or near tropics, in Asia, Africa and Latin America. CWS philosophy has changed, too. To quote Mrs. McCray, "It isn't how much we can hand out, but what we can provide that will help people to help themselves. This means a different approach. Funds are needed to provide new sewing machines for sewing classes. Fabrics are also needed. CWS could use many, many more fabric-sewing kits." The new approach does not mean elimination of the used clothing program, however.. 1974 requests for clothing and blankets are expected to exceed 2 million pounds. Items most needed are babies' layettes, children's garments and men's clothes.
