What can he possibly be thinking about that makes him seem so pensive? His thoughts probably aren't very serious, for babies often strike delightful and comical poses that enliven the family photo album. But babies grow up and become adults, with real problems and difficult decisions to make. Don't forget, as your baby matures, to emphasize those things that will enable him to cope with his future. Don't forget love, discipline, understanding--and es pecially, don't forget the Church! I have been in and about military and naval hospitals, ship's sick bay, Army field hospitals, nursing homes and sanitaria - you name it. I spent Holy Week in our local McHenry hospital. This was the thirteenth time I have been a patient in nine different hospitals. If you are one of those people who are afraid of hospitals, if you've had a 'bad'. day the corn beef and cabbage was real good. It got to me pretty warm. I was content. They didn't even ask me to help with the dishes. And the doctor - sometimes he came pretty early - once quite late in the day. He would come in at a rapid pace (he has plenty to do) and give me a run down of what and why and when. He took time to answer my questions and then with a word of assurance he was gone- - whiskers, smile and white coat to next place. Bless him. Sure they are expensive! Do you want to go to a 'cheap' medical service that cuts corners--that does not have what your family needs? Good care is never cheap - you are buying health and comfort and strength. Last week I had fun. I wasn't too sick and needed rest and re- regulation of medicines. Every tin* I nog sffteone came - some one williftg to help. There .ar»4)lfferent kinds of nurses and nursing specialties. There jare varied skills - so many people help you from high school candy stripers through aides - practical nurses with some training and R.N.'s witbJJts of training and exp^1 are technician* therapists. There I Men escorts to take you to treatments. (I never c figure out why they come an get you - I was able to walk after a bit). They even wheeled me to the front door when I was discharged. And the food! How many complaints I have heard in years gone by. But a hospital diet kitchen is not supposed to be a gourmet retaurant. Its job with me was to keep the calories down. Even so, there were some tasty dishes - one mm' to a few of their problems. Most of our medical men try harder than some patients realize to do many things for many people. And lots of people love their doctors even as they love a faithful rabbi, priest or minister. (Father Arthur McKay brought me Holy Communion one morning). - No one likes the hospital bills. But how do you run so much with the dollars available and everyone calling for more pay? We senior citizens can thank God for Medicare. And even now doctors, some of the very best ones, are seeking ways to provide medical care for those whom it can hardly reach as prices climb and years of training extend in length and increased cost. Laymen without intensive training are being taught to recognize and help in simple ways to care for the ill in less privileged places. I am glad I am a priest. It has been a useful and rewarding life. If there were such a thing as reincarnation - which I do not believe - I would like to give a life or two to medicine - and then there are politics, forestry, art, music, architecture, teaching - where do you stop? by BOB JUSTEN When you think about it, there is nothing mysterious or complex about "human nature". Human nature is nothing other than human habits. Human nature is therefore changeable the same as human habits are changeable. Surprisingly, human nature is often men tioned to excuse personal offenses and misbehavior ft Is equally surprising that the inherent goodness man is seldom mentioned as human nature. Hie human habits of love, tolerance and respect are certainly as much of human nature as the faults of greed, distrust and other obnoxious vices. Actually, when you look around, you see far more love, trust and selflessness than hate, distrust and selfishness. In these troublesome times in human relations, it still is true that goodness exceeds the bad. And more importantly, it is good to stress that bad habits can be changed to good habits if a will to do so exists. In short, "human nature" can be changed. Just change "human habits". GEORGE R. JUSTEN FUNERAL HOME 3519 W. Elm Street, McHenry, Illinois Phone: 385-2400 re FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of April 26, 1934) A fire, causing a heavy loss, swept through the buildings on the former John Gracy farm near Terra Cotta, Saturday morning, destroying the barn, a small horse barn and granary, milk house, silo, engine house and electric motor. The farm, now owned by Mrs. Mary Carey of McHenry, is rented by Nels Pearson who has a hired man, Charles Rice, and family, living on the place. The R.M. (Dick) Fleming Implement company is already well established in the Althoff building, opposite the Farmers mill, where customers will find Mr. Fleming,1 sole owner and proprietor of the business, Right now be glad you've got a good hospital in McHenry. Try to help. Maybe someone could even get a small patients' library started with a cart of books to wheel into rooms so patients could do a little reading. I got through two bodes - a dozen magazines and said my prayers and offices every day. Keep well, folks, hold your weight down and commend the things you worry about to God. Maybe you won't have ttygo to our hospital. Legal Notice School District 15 will receive sealed bids on custodial and maintenance supplies until 10:00 A.M. on April 30, 1974.
