You may not realize this, but some air conditioners use a lot more electricity than others to cool the same amount of space. And in the summer, when the heat gets unbearable and millions of people turn on their air conditioners to find relief, this can amount to a significant waste of electricity. On a normal summer day, as the graph above shows, Commonwealth Edison may have to deliver three to four million kilowatts more than on an average winter day. To meet this summer demand, extra amounts of fuel must be burned. By making sure you buy the kind of air conditioner that gives the same cooling with less electricity you can save money and save us all critically needed fuel. The thing to check is known as the EER, an engineers term which stands for Energy Efficiency Ratio. And there's information on every air conditioner that lets you figure it out. JAN FEB MAR APR MAY JUNE JULY AUG SEPT OCT MOV DEC •SIMPLIFIED GRAPH OF SEASONAL DEMAND FOR ELECTRICITY You don't have to be an engineer to find the EER. All the information you need to buy an efficient air conditioner can be found on the metal plate attached to the unit. 1* MODEL NUMBER ACRZOB74P VOUS PMASE COOLING BTU/HR AMPS W 6000 Our recommended energy efficiency ratio for an air condi tioner is 7 or more, so the one with an EER of 7 is the.one you should buy. Low efficiency units have EERs of around 5 or 6. You save money, too. You've already found that the second example is the more efficient air conditioner. It will probably cost a little more to buy, but because its more efficient, it would cost less to operate. In the long run, an efficient air conditioner helps keep electricity rates as low as possible. And right now, an efficient air conditioner helps conserve our country's natural resources. Commonwealth Edison concern tor your total environment BTUS WATTS To get the EER, simply divide the BTUs by the watts. If you're comparing two 6,000-BTU models for efficiency, it would look like this: 7km g5d[&BrVs itfrrs Show Business. . .A World Of Fantasy" When the McHenry Choral club presents its annual spring program Saturday and Sunday, May 4 and 5, audiences will be listening to some of their favorite tunes from "Finian's Rainbow". Among those to be heard in selections from that popular Broadway play will be Don Johnson, left, and Ed Wittrock, center, singing Hie Begat Song," Barbara Miller in "When the Idle Poor Become the Idle Rich" and Don Reinboldtjright, singing "When I'm Not Near the Girl I Love". Tickets are now on sale for the usual price from members. They will be slightly higher at the door the nights of the performances. STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD ~ "Show Business --A World of Fantasy" is the theme chosen by the McHenry Choral club for its spring presentation May 4 and 5 in West campus auditorium at 8:15 p.m. The singers will open the formal part of the program with a tribute to that theme as they sing, "There's No Business Like Show Business". The remainder of the program will be divided into three sections, one devoted to music from the Broadway play, "Finian's Rainbow", another to favorites from the operetta, "The Vagabond King", and third to brief scenes from the opera "Carmen". "Finian's Rainbow" is the story of Finian McLonergan of Glocca Morra, Ireland, who believes all Americans are millionaires. Through a bit of finagling, he manages to convince his daughter that this is the land of plenty and they should become a part of it, However, the pot of gold he has "borrowed" from his leprechaun friend infuriates the mischievous elf of Irish folklore, who follows him to the U.S.A. The Choral club's offering is not a presentation of the play, but of the music which made it famous. During intermission, entertainment will be furnished by Otto Pyritz, who will lead community singing with his accordion, and a mini-concert by the Joyful Noises, a group of youngsters directed by Ed Wittrock. After Wednesday, May 1, the advance purchase of tickets will be available only from Donald Johnson at 3819 W. Main street. Bodes and friends should each be well chosen, and well cared for. Covenant Women Celebrate Post Lenten Service The Covenant Women of the Chain O'Lakes Evangelical Covenant church, 4815 N. Wilmot road, met Tuesday, April 16, to celebrate a post- lenten service. It centet-ed around the seven symbols of Christ's suffering - the bread and cup, the thirty pieces of silver, the crown of thorns, the cross, the robe, the vinegar and sponge, and the spear. Each symbol was carried to the altar while scripture readers then read Old and New Testament verses relating to the symbols. The sound scriptural basis made the program meaningful and inspirational to both those who attended and those who participated. Those women participating in the program were Mrs. Corrine Olson, Mrs Jean Mionske, Mrs. Arlene Crittenden, Mrs. Janet Cluff, Mrs. Darlene Considine, Mrs. Ruth Armagast, Mrs. Ginny Covalt, Mrs. Barbara Wernquist, Mrs. Sandy Gelwicks, Mrs. Ethel Hitz, Mrs. Jean Bianchi, Mrs. Evelyn Zvonar, Mrs. Dorothy Machnik and Mrs. Shirley Hedman. Mrs. Arlene Crittenden and Mrs. Eola Deppmeier organized the special program. FOX RIVER STONE CO.
