The latest bicycling craze may be sweep ing the land, but some aren't so enthusiastic: "Haven't been on a bike for years!" "I get all the exercise I want working in the garden!" "Bikes are faff kids!" These skeptics should try cruising down a country road where the smell of haystacks, hyacinths or magnolias sweetens the air, or experience the warmth of open play grounds, the coolness of tree-shaded streets, the unblurred faces of neighbors. It's a whole new world. Valley HI Festival To Be Held May 4-5 There is a stir of excitement in the halls and public rooms of Valley Hi Nursing home in Hartland. An electric current of happy anticipation crackles and sparks, lighting up eyes dimmed with age. ; All of the ninety patients in the county home are looking forward to the May 4 and 5 festival that is spearheaded by the Crystal Lake Woman's club. The many service and religious organizations that have volunteer programs at the home are also enthusiastic in offering their help for the planned activities that will begin at noon both Saturday and Sunday. The crafts room under the direction of Mary Knaack, activities director, hums daily as gnarled fingers paint vases and plates, and unsteady scissors cut fabric and ribbon. Every item created will go on sale at the fair to build up the hoped for funds to purchase a diathermy machine and portable X-ray machine for the physical therapy room. "Much of the cheerfulness that emanates from the home is due to the warm personality of W i l l i a m M o o r e f i e l d , administrator," said Mrs. Ruth • Stout, Crystal Lake Woman's club chairman for the fair. Today, some 90 percent of the homes $500,000 annual budget is funded through the Illinois Department of Public Aid's various medicaid programs. McHenry county contributed $25,000 yearly and the remaining funds come from Social Security and retirement benefits. Although care facilities are adequate there are extras which will make the work of the professional and volunteer staff much more effective, according to Moorefield. "The diathermy machine and portable X-ray which we hope to purchase with the profits from the fair will be most welcome," he said. "Even our cahdystripers are delighted at the prospect." The candystripers, under the direction of Mrs. Sue Pyper, wiU serve as runners and guides during the fair. Moorefield will accept any donations brought directly to the home. In this stage version of Henry Fielding's enduringly popular novel, she will be seen as Sophia Western, the modest but intensely eager sweetheart of flamboyant Tom. Ever since "Tom Jones" first became the best seller of its time, in 1749, admirers of Sophia have wondered who in real life sat for this memorable portrait. Literary historians are always trying to identify the actual originals for the truly vivid heroines of fiction. Who was it, they want to know, that Shakespeare had in mind in his paean to the Dark Lady in his sonnets? With regard to Sophia Western this game usually narrows down to two young women who importantly figured in Henry Fielding's life. One was Sarah Andrew, with whom Fielding fell in love at the age of 21 - which was past the time when he had himself been hunting in the woods of Dorsetshire in the way he paints the romance of Tom Jones and Sophia. Fielding tried to arrange an elopement with Sarah Andrew, the plan misfired, and that was that. Then, after nine years he married a wealthy Miss Charlotte Craddock. Which lady was the real-life Sophia Western? Amid speculations, one thing is sure: Sophia Western is a wonderful example of sweet and ardent young girlhood, ranking with Shakespeare's Rosalind in her capacity to win every man's heart. Tickets are available by mail. Box 175. Woodstock. ! THINK ABOUT IT! by BOB JUSTEN The white haired maestro Leopold Stokowski, at an age well past three score years and ten, continued an inspirationally active life. By personal example, he shamed many younger people when he said, "I would rather talk about the future, the past is something we can no longer do anything about." He put his words in action. In approaching age 80, he grouped both young and old in the American Sym phony. One third of the musicians were talented youth; the other two thirds vyere more experienced, more mature. Dedicated to his conviction that America is a land of opportunity and that it must remain so, he exemplified a lesson many of us should heed. The young learn from the old and the old gain from the vitality and enthusiasm of the young. In recent years, in too many areas of employment, it is a shame that this two fold concept of opportunity seems to have been side-tracked. . . GEORGE R. JUSTEN FUNERAL HOME .3519 W.
