John Busscher came in this week with men's golf news from McHenry Country Club. Keep 'em coming, John. We look forward to your weekly visits (even if you are one of those North Side fans.) Liz Nolan brought in the ladies' golf news last week. Dee Overtoil sent it in for this issue. Espar Oja will be back again this year to report on the s-on. Haven't talked to ir, but Liz gave us the word. A card to our house from Helen Miller in San Antonio, Texas tells us "This town has everything but a baseball ftaree." We'll scratch that town off our list. The globe trotting Bacons, "Zeke" and Charlotte, send a card from Mexico and tell us they will be back in Illinois soon. Watching the Sox beat the -Orioles 2 to 1 Tuesday night *kept us thinking of Mary Etten. £' That must have been better toian medicine for Mary. % - I •. Ron Santo is in the groove - hit a 2-run homer to win the game and played second base like he belongs there. Santo's home run went to dead center. We saw him hitting the same way in spring training, but some of those Masts were caught at the 400 foot mark. Wait 'til he starts pulling the ball to left field. One has to consider that Ron is playing in a big park this year. Don't know if it is intentional or not, but Dick Allen is hitting down on the ball and getting singles over second base. He may be getting his average up before aiming for the fences. The same old story in ball games. Walks will kill you. On the other hand we get sick and tired watching batters take those perfect strikes down the middle. When a pitcher isn't wild, why take a couple of strikes and get in a hole. Our idea is that if a pitcher throws one right down the pike, the batter had better take a swing at it. He won't give 'em another one that good. Some of these TV and radio commercials slay us. And how come those millionaire personalities have to take over the announcements. There must be a lot of good performers who could use those jobs. Those Baltimore Orioles will be glad to wing their way out of Chicago. The White Sox mowed them down again, 2 to 0. Jerry Miller is enthusiastic about the opening of the Men's 16" Softball League schedule and wants us to remind you that play starts Monday, May 6. See schedule on this page (or maybe on the next page). Somebody sent this in: PONTIAC, IL--April is beautiful. It means birds, flowers, green grass, and baseball. Of course, it also means flies and mosquitoes, and septic tanks overflowing, and Cub fans shooting off their mouths. September is beautiful, too. By that time, the septic tanks dry up, and so do the Cub fans. Cub fans may reply and get equal space. Little Cars He asked this gentleman how he liked the new little economy cars. The gentleman replied: "They're fine, except when you have to cross the street -- you have to look left, right, and down!" It was a close game with Crown pushing across a run in the first and again in the third inning. The Warriors managed their only run, in the 4th. Steve Himpelmann went all the way and took his second loss of the season. He gave up 4 hits, walked 2 and struck out 5. Again a lack of clutch hitting hurt the Warriors. They left 8 men on base, and had the bags loaded in the bottom of the 7th, but couldn't get a run across the plate. The loss drops the Warriors to a conference record of 4 and 5.
