POPPY DAY "On Saturday, May 25, 1974, the streets of our city will come alive with a splash of scarlet." So stated Ralph J. Coop, State Commander of The American Legion of Illinois, in his opening remarks to the members of the American Legion and the American Legion Auxiliary Poppy Commission of Illinois. "These memorial Poppies," contini Commander Coop, "serve to pay homage and tribute to our nation's war dead. For their color serves to remind us all that the blood of those gallant dead has made possible the survival of our Great America." "The supreme sacrifice that his little flower brings to mind, and the valuable services for the disabled veterans, and the needy children of veterans that his poppy makes possible, renders a genuine pride and satisfaction to not only The American Legion and American Legion Auxiliary who carry on this magnificent program, but to the million who wear the poppy ori poppy day Ss well." "The citizens of Illinois know and realize that the poppy makes possible the employment of disabled veterans in hospitals and workrooms, helps pass the tedious hours of hospitalized veterans, brings the necessary encouragement of earning money again for the veterans' support, and in many cases, the support of his family as well and also provides valuable occupational therapy." "But above all," concluded Commander Coop, "we wear the poppy over our hearts in dignity and in reverence, to show that we remember with heartfelt gratitude those who died that free America might live." Poppy Chairman, Auxiliary Unit 1169, Lois Haak, announces poppy day in Wondey Lake will be on May 25, Saturday. TRAIN SERVICE "Editor: "I have submitted to the Illinois Commerce commission for purposes of being read into the record of proceedings involving the ICC's own motion ordering the Chicago and North Western Transportation company to show cause why it should-not repair the Crystal Lake Junction-Lake (Jeneva branchline trackage to restore safe 40-50 mph commuter passenger train operations. "As you know, the railroad has ordered two successive slowdowns of the trains operating over the branchline, starting at a point approximately one mile south of McHenry and extending northward all the way to Lake Geneva, about 27 miles. The first slowdown was to 30 mph, and the most recent to a maximum of 15 mph. Actually, on timing, the trains operate over some sections as slowly at 7 to 10 mph, averaging 14 mph for the entire distance. "It now requires one hour and 10 minutes train time from McHenry to Lake Geneva. On the entire run. Lake Geneva to downtown Chicago^ the added running time is about 37 minutes each way. Or about two hours and 40 minutes one way elapsed time. (Some trainmen are leaving the lights turned off in certain coaches so we commuters can resume our morning sleep inbound. Next thing, they'll probably want to charge Pullman rates.) "The ICC hearings probably will be long and protracted, and already some groundwork has been laid for railroad testimony relating to possible abandonment of the entire branch, possible termination at McHenry, possible connecting bus service from Lake Geneva to McHenry, or if RTA becomes operative, the possibility of connecting south of Richmond with the Milwaukee mainline (70 mph trackage) and bringing the CNWT trains into Chicago at Union Station. "If the connection with the Milwaukee were to be made (considering highway crossing and an upgrade to elevation, also a very costly proposition as opposed to the $300,000 CNWT testifies it will cost to repair the branchline), there probably would be no service to McHenry and certainly none to Ringwood. We would have the alternatives of using stations at Crystal Lake, Richmond,' Spring Grove or Fox Lake. All at greater distances and more inconvenient. "Actually, based on figures and maps supplied by the CNWT Co., there is an obvious larger problem looming in the background. It is clear that the profitable passenger loads virtually stop at Barrington. There are approximately 1,500 CNWT commuters in McHenry county, using stations at Harvard, Woodstock, Crystal Lake on the mainline, and Richmond, Ringwood and McHenry on the branchline. "This leads me to RTA. Since I have said at public meetings with press present, I'll repeat here, that our McHenry county and state representatives who were so opposed to RTA, in my opinion, seriously misled the public with many dire and unfounded assertions. "But the point they really failed to get across to the public, if they knew it at all, and I suspect they did, was the fact that Mayor Daley did not need RTA for his intra-city CTA. All he needed was a rejection of RTA by the voters, and he could apply for a federal Urban Mass Transit Authority subsidy of some $22 million per year for 10 years. That is why I think Daley did not more vociferously campaign for RTA. "The smart operators close to inner operations of these intricate things had said for months that Chicagoans should vote 'No' and all suburbanites in the affected counties should vote 'Yes' - the results, of course, were just the opposite. "Why should suburbanites, including those who never use train service and including farmers, vote yes? The very 'presence of available efficient and frequent train service in McHenry county has a pronounced positive influence on land values. "Eliminate train service throughout the county, just like draining the water from Wonder Lake, and see what will happen to property values and potential future growth! Then take the next step, appreciating land values have a bearing on real estate tax revenues. And so forth. "The time is drawing near when the specific issue of whether or not the Chicago and North Western Transportation company will have to rennovate the branchline trackage and return the trains to maximum rather than minimum branchline speeds (usually 50 mph for that type of trackage); and, indeed, whether the railroad will have to maintain service at all - on the branch or possibly even within McHenry county, if one takes a much longer-range viewpoint. "So the 'cyclists beat the trains in a race from McHenry north to Lake Geneva. Great! But a sad commentary on operating performance by the railroad. Actually, one could almost streak in front of the locomotives without fear of bodily injury by being run over. "Cordially yours, "James L.
