4 Twice Told Tales FORTY YEARSAGO (Taken frorfi the files of May 10, 1934) Midsummer heat sent the thermometer, Sunday, to 90 degrees, breaking the heat record of the year and establishing May 6,1934, as one of the hottest days of that date in many years. At the annual election of the Business and Professional Women's club of McHenry county held at Woodstock, Mrs. C.W. Goodell of McHenry was _ elected president of the county organization for the year beginning June 1. There are forty-seven graduates from the rural schools of this district graduating May 16 at the community high school. The rural schools include Johnsburg, Lincoln school, Lily Lake, Griswold Lake, Ringwood, Harrison district, Ostend, Clemens and Prairie school. The McHenry Shamrocks traveled to Volo Sunday and lost to an up and coming Volo nine on a diamond that was just "" made this year and was very rough in spots due to lack of rain. The golf team representing the high school participated in the district qualifications for the state meet next Saturday when they traveled to Highland Park under the supervision of McCracken. Sonny Johnson, captain of the McHenry team, had an 87 to place tenth in the district. A new building is being built at Lily Lake where G. Weisbaum will open a grocery market and general merchandise store about May 30. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of May 12, 1949) Mr. Frank G. Schreinef, 66, editor and publisher for almost twenty years and associated with the paper for several years before that, passed away at his home on Waukegan street, May 5, following a long period of ill health. He first became interested in the printing trade at the age of fourteen and began his apprenticeship with the old McHenry Journal under the guidance of the publisher and editor, Andrew O. Rupp. The Journal office was located north of the present Green street bridge. The life of the newspaper wis short 'arid in 1900 ceased publication. At the meeting of the county council of the American Legion auxiliary at Hebron at which time officers were elected. Minnie Green of McHenry was elected president. On May 7, Miss Clara Trebatoski of Rosholt, Wis., and Mr. James McAndrews of McHenry were united in marriage at St. Albert's Catholic church in Rosholt with Msgr. Klowaski, a friend of the family, officiating. The annual style show of the Future Homemakers of America is being held May 12 in the high school auditorium under the direction of Miss May E. Justen. A special feature of this year's revue will be showing of the contrast in the styles of yesterday and those of today. One of the latest campaigns to be undertaken in McHenry township, this time against dreaded cancer, is progressing nicely according to Mrs. George Barbian, local chairman. No definite figures will be released until the close of the drive. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of May 14, 1964) St. Patrick's church in McCook, Nebr., was the setting for the April 18 wedding of Miss Jacolyn Valere McLeland of McCook and Mr. William Dennis Sheehan of Chicago and a McHenry summer resident. Esther Fowler of Crystal Lake has been selected by the woman's auxiliary of McHenry hospital to be their model at the Hospital's-on-parade fashion show sponsored by the Grant hospital woman's auxiliary at the Conrad Hilton hotel, May 14. Mrs. Jennie Morse, 78, who resided in the Island Lake area, died May 10 in her home. On May 5, a daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Patrick Faunt at the McHenry hospital. Mr. and Mrs. William A. Pries, Jr., of the Certified Food store on Green street, are the recipients of a five day all expense World's Fair trip which was won on a promotion program sponsored the Certified Grocers of Illinois CYCLONE IS COMING T TO : Jos.H.Huemann & SONS } WELL DRILLING "Black Forest Cottage", a painting by Bernard Schwanke of McHenry was purchased by the class of 1963 as a gift to their school. An Oct. 24 wedding is planned. FORTY YEARSAGO (Taken from the files of May 17, 1934) Mrs. G.A. Vasey, 56 years old, died at her home near Volo, May 17, after a long illness. Paul Doherty was elected secretary of the Democratic Senatorial committee of the eighth senatorial district at a meeting held at Woodstock, May 8. Mr. and Mrs. Beckenbaugh and family moved Wednesday to the John Regner farm house at Pistakee Bay. Mr. Beckenbaugh will work by the day for Henry Smith, manager of the Skidmore farm. At the thirty-seventh annual state convention of the Knights of Columbus convened at Peoria on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week. The Grand Knight of McHenry council, A.E. Nye, was selected as delegate to the national convention to be held in Detroit next August. A harmony dance is being sponsored by the Third Precinct Democratic club of McHenry at the Bridge Ballroom, May 23. Sizzling syncopation is to be rendered by Frankie Gans and his orchestra. A double birthday celebration was held at the home of Thomas and Kate McLaughlin Sunday in honor of William Doherty, 78 years old, and William Stevens of Richmond, 87 years old, who were honored guests of the day. Mr. Stevens who is an old schoolmaster and former resident of this vicinity met two of his former pupils, Mayor Peter Doherty and Jay Doherty. Mr. and Mrs. Albert Vales and family attended the silver wedding celebration of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Vales in Chicago recently for whom they served as bridesmaid and bestman at the original ceremony. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of May 19, 1949) This week the Plaindealer is observing its diamond jubilee seventy-five years of bringing to a growing circulation the bits of joy and sorrow, the small happenings and the major events which make up life in McHenry and its surrounding community. McHenry boasted only a few hundred people back in 1875 when the Plaindealer was founded. Jay . VanSlyke was the founder of the Plaindealer and remained as its editor for twenty-six years. • Local firemen were summoned at an early hour on Monday morning to a summer home in the Country club subdivision. The owners had visited the cottage on Sunday, Holes in one wall, the floor and ceiling caused damage estimated at $500. McHenry Lumber company has opened a second yard at Wonder Lake. Harvey B. Williams of McHenry general contractor has offices located in the building. A very beautiful wedding took place May 18 when Miss Leo da McCarthy became the bride of Mr. Leonard Freund who resides north of town. The nuptial service was solemnized at St. Mary's church. Paul, young son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Steffan, suffered a fractured arm while at play in the school playground. Complaints have been received from local school bus drivers against motorists who fail to observe the law which states that cars must not pass a school bus which is taking on or discharging passengers. The Lake McHenry County assessors association met last Thursday when Mrs. Eva Bacon of McHenry was appointed vice-president to fill the vacany created by the death of Jim Morrieofi. Bruno T. Butler, 65, of Ringwood, died May 13 in Memorial hospital, Woodstock, following several months illness. Linda Rae Larson, candy striper at McHenry hospital, was awarded a gold pin for her 500 hours of volunteer work last week at the Women's auxiliary meeting. St. Mary's church was the scene of the wedding uniting Miss Carolynne Taylor of McCullom Lake and Mr. Dennis Blaha of Pistakee Highlands May 16. Nuptial Mass with exchange was recited by Holmgren. An honor came McGee* former McHenry postmaster at the recent Rotary club anniversary dinner.
