We always start out by jutting S.I.H. at the head of a column, then wonder where we go from there. It is MOTHER'S DAY. That should be a lead. Heard Father Baumhofer speak this morning on the place mothers play in our lives. For one who no longer has a mother, only fond memories, the meaning of the day has been clear for a long time. However, a thought carried away is that mothers expect only for us to be good. It made us think of a time, perhaps related before, when we called on our mother, before going out for an evening. Her •. parting word was* "Be a good boy." J if We were 50 years old. 4 Also thought of an Old Timer in McHenry's earlier days. Whenever he got a few snorts under the belt, he would happily tell one and all, "We're all good boys." Had a letter from "Zeke" describing all the beautiful birds out there in the west. After cleaning our car this morning, we had a few descriptions of our birds that weren't mentioned in the letter. We try to hold our gas buggy down to 50 M.P.H., but find various types of vehicles going psast us like our anchor was dragging. Mona set that big White Sox mug in front of us again Friday night as we sat down to a table at the Green Pearl. That's what we call service beyond the call of duty. A nice lady was telling us how her husband quit smoking and gained 40 pounds. You can't win. Met Walter Smith and the thought struck us that he looks more like his late father, "Pete", all the time. Walter has had a tough bout with illness. We were thinking of his younger and healthier days when he used to attend dances at Njesen's Old Fox Pavilion in a wooded area on Lincoln Road. It is kind remarks from the likes o' Walter that make us keep trying in this column business. Both the Cubs and Sox won their games today so there isn't much chance of an argument tomorrow. That makes for a dull day. Sophs Second In Dundee Invitational Northern lllini Bowmen News Northern lllini Bowmen's May meeting is scheduled for 8 p.m., Thursday, May 16 at the McHenry Legion. With the final meeting of the Spring Grove Saddle Club Horse Show Committee out of the way, the preparations for the May 26 (rain date June 2) Family Style Horse and Pony Show have been finalized. Judge T. Tenlin of Laingsburg, Mich., will arrive on Saturday and the 31 classes have been set with a full complement of pony as well as horse classes. The performance classes will be in the morning with the Equitation Over Fences for Horses and Ponies coming immediately after lunch. The afternoon will be devoted to speed and fun events. April Pokladnik will assist Judge Tenlin and Sally Thompson will be judging the trail event which will be run outside of the arena. A new ring has been built by the Spring Grove Horse Fair Committee and is 200' x 300' with a blue clay base and sand overlay.
