This date will be changed if a date other than this is established as the official trick or treat day. November 2 and 9, Gift Bazaar and Bake Sale; this will be our second fund raising event. We need ideas and help to make gift items to sell.. Donations of materials, ideas and willing hands will be appreciated. November 23; Pre-holiday dinner dance; the location and cost for this event have not been established yet We hope to keep the cost low and to furnish a pleasant evening for all. December 21; Santa's Visit. Santa will again visit the village handing out candy filled stockings and small gifts. As you can see we have tried to plan an event for all age groups and a variety of events. If you have any other suggestions or ideas please come to our meetings and share them with us. Social club meetings are held the third Wednesday of each month at the village hall at 7:30 p.m. TEEN CLUB NEWS- KIM OLBINSKI The Teen Club held its third official meeting May 20. It was again a very good turnout with four new members. The new members are Jean Colberg, Mary Beslich, Mike Chapman and Dave Chapman. The main discussion at this meeting was a possible campout at our beach area. We will also be selling popcorn and lemonade this week at the men's Thursday night softball games. If anyone is interested in joining or would like to see what is taking place, just come to a meeting. Our meetings are held the first and third Monday of each month at the village hall, at 7:30 p.m. We hope to see all teenagers from the village participate. HELPING HANDS Have you wondered who was the additional man on the road crew working the last several weeks. Well his name is Rudy Barnett who so graciously gave of his time and energies. Also Robert Loss supplied the village with all of our necessary paper needs. CLERK'S NOTES The regular office hours of the village clerk are from 2 to 4 p.m. on Mondays and 7:30 to 9 p.m. on Thursday nights. Motorcycle vehicle stickers are now available as well as fishing anth bunting licenses. We also have free copies of the 1974-75 Illinois Fishing Information digest just for the asking. The regular board of trustee meetings are held the second and fourth Thursday of each month at the village hall at 7:30 p.m. sharp. The public is always invited. WEED CUTTING The weed cutting on all vacant lots that have not been taken care of by the owners will begin June 3. The empty lots will not be cleaned out this year by the village as was the case last year. If there is debris in among the weeds, then it is suggested that whoever lives next door please clean them out, as the cutter will only mow those areas that are free of debris. Much of the debris is large items that were put there since last summer, please remove it as it is on private property. The choice is yours to either have weeds or a mowed lot. The teen club has offered to help the road department Saturday to clean the area of cut, dried branches on the right of ways. Our thanks to the teen club. [ by BOB JUSTEN Every American knows Memorial Day is a national holiday. We wonder though how many people are acquainted with the historical background. It began when a group of southern women honored the dead in BOTH the Union and Confederate armies DURING the Civil War. It is believed that a Mrs. Cassandra Moncure led the group in the ceremony of placing flowers on graves of the dead soldiers. Mrs. Moncure was of French descent and presumably chose May 30 because that date had French significance in similar memorial purpose. May 30 was known as "The Day of the Ashes" in France, a memorial day to commemorate the internment in France of Napoleon Bonaparte who died in St. Helena. From an initially modest and restricted ceremonial day which honored only the Civil War dead Memorial Day now honors all the valiant men who died in tne Spanish American War, World Wars I and II, Korea and Viet Nam.
