Give National Recognition To Lake Region "Y" National recognition was given this week to the Lake Region YMCA for its health and physical education program, J^mes Zoellick, executive director, has announced. A Certificate of Merit was awarded in recognition of the high quality of service performed in one of the major current thrusts of the YMCAs across the U.S.f Reducing health problems by strengthening physical and nental health. Presented by the National Council of YMCAs through its National and Region One Physical Education committee, the certificate allows the Lake it^gion YMCA to enter its registered amateur athletes in Official area and national sports competition with other YMCAs around the country. It cqn also participate in the National Physical Education programs. The certification is given ievery three years to those -associations that meet the standards set by the YMCA National Health and Physical Education committee, and who request it. To meet these standards, according to Richard Young, physical education director, the Lake Region YMCA must conduct a balanced and interesting program of physical education; have a physical education committee and volunteer leaders to give guidance in policy and program development, and use the National YMCA Aquatic program in its building, the community and its camp. It must also maintain qualified professional leadership to guide its program, operate in accordance with an adequate up-to-date written policy and be a member in good standing of the National Council of YMCAs. By Matthew S. Rosen Instructor Ornamental Horticulture McHenry County College A proper mowing program is probably the single m^st important factor contributing to both the longevity and well groomed appearance of any turfgrass area. Unfortunately, gentlemen, grass cutting is without a doubt the most time consuming gardening chore. Mowing height is critical. The correct height of cut for your lawn is solely dependent upon the species of grass being grown. Why, you ask? The answer lies in the ability of the grass plant to maintain that amount of leaf (blade) surface necessary to produce the minimum quantity of photosynthate required--for vigorous plant growth. When properly fertilized and watered, creeping type grasses , like bent are able to maintain an adequate amount of blade surface at very low heights of cut. Indeed, all of the bentgrasses look best at mowing heights ranging from y4"-l". Kentucky blue-grass, ryegrass, and red fescue, on the other hand, must be cut at heights of 1 if vigorous growth is to be maintained. Strict adherence to a regular mowing schedule is essential. Infrequent or sporadic cutting allows grass plants to elongate to such" a degree that any clipping removes an excess amount of leaf surface, and thus throws the plant into a physiological state of shock. As a general rule, at no time should mowing remove more than thirty-five per cent of the leaf surface area. Removal of higher percentages invariably results in excessive browning or yellowing of the leaf tips. Because the overall production "Perhaps most important of all," Young said, "A local association receiving the certificate must continually evaluate, revise, amplify and modernize its physical education program to meet changing community needs. of photosynthate temporarily declines sharply, much of the stored food reserves in the roots must be used by the plants to sustain life. Slowly starving, the "anemic" looking turf is far more susceptible to drought, injury, and disease. The frequency one must mow is thus a function of the type of grass, as well as the rate at which leaf elongation occurs. Such diverse factors as soil fertility, moisture conditions, and season of the year all interact to determine te overall . growth rate. Within rather broad limits, the more fertile the soil, and the greater the amount of rainfall, the more rapid the grass will grow."1 Disregarding winter, for we all know that grass does not grow during those frigid months, the effect of season on speed of growth is related to the native, inborn habit of the grass. For example: Kentucky bluegrass is primarily a cool season grass, i.e., it makes most of its growth while the mercury is resting in the high sixties to mid seventies. Bluegrass lawns must thus be mowed with greater frequency in the spring and fall. Bentgrass, on the other hand, is a warm season grass, waiting for the hot summer months before beginning its most active growth period. Despite popular opinion, grass clippings need not be raked up as long as a regular mowing program is followed. The light, amputated grass segments will quickly be scattered far and wide by the wind. Infrequent mowing, however, results in relatively long, "heavy" clippings. Unless these are collected, they will almost certainly mat down. A gradual accumulation of long clippings may not only smother grass plants; but also create ideal environmental conditions for both disease and insect activity. Mowing equipment, whether reel or rotary, must be kept in good operating condition. If your lawn has a grayish cast or" appears scorched the day after cutting, your mower needs sharpening. Have you ever noticed how turfgrass areas that are regularly cut with power mowers tend to develop a series of wave-like ridges running at right angles to the direction of the cut. The appearance of the "washborad" pattern is easily prevented by simply regularly changing the direction in which you mow. Try to avoid mowing wet grass. Dry grass not only cuts more easily, resulting in a finely manicured look; but also, the severed grass does not have the frustrating tendency of clogging up your mower by caking into large, clumps.
