Especially for Mom Some Recipes For Mealtime At Campsfte It may not ail be beer and skittles for mom when the family takes off on a camping trip, but with a little planning, a few easy recipes and the right uten sils and supplies, the camp ing trip can be fun for all. Hearty appetites are com mon at mealtime in camp.. To guarantee an easy to fix meal and one that will satisfy the froanings of the hungriest damper, simplic ity is the key. Here are a few "camper's favorites" that will take little time to prepare and will insure you of youf- "fair share" of time for outdoor fun. CAMP PIZZA Make the dough with '2 cups Bisquick Baking Mix, Vi teaspoon salt, and Vi cup cold water. Smooth ball on floured surface and knead Ave times. Divide into four equal parts and pat into eight inch circles. Cook the circles of dough on a skillet until brown, about five min utes. Turn and spread with filling, cover with lid or aluminum foil until well heated through. The filling can be made with whatever is available in camp. You can use spa ghetti sauce, tomato sauce or catsup, topped tftth canned luncheon meat, frankfurter slices or pep- peroni and grated parmesan cheese. Delicious! HOBO BAGS Place a fresh piece of fish or a hamburger patty on a large square of aluminum foil. Top with thinly sliced potatoes, canned corn, canned green beans and a little sliced onion. Pull the corners of the foil square up to form a pouch. Cook on grill or coals until fish or meat is done (30-45 min.). The foil is folded down for serving. A whole meal in a pouch! HAM 'N EGG SANDWICH The mixture can be made at home and kept in the ice chest until you prepare the sandwiches in camp. Use one hardbolled egg, one slice cooked ham, Vfe green pepper, (all chopped) per sandwich. Add V* tea spoon minced onion (per sandwich), salt, pepper and mayonnaise to taste. (Last ingredient can be added in camp if you have no refrig eration). Store in plastic bag. At mealtime spread the mixture on a slice of bread, spread margarine on an other and make a sand wich. Fry on/ greased skillet until well tyeated through, "toothpicks can be used to hbld sandwiches together. Mealtime in camp Is more fun if your equipment is easy and safe to use. That's why more campers are us ing propane fueled appli ances. There is no danger ous spilling or pumping involved and propane burns hot and steady for efficient cooking. Unlike other liquid fuel, propane will not deterio rate. It is inexpensive and available almost anywhere, especially when used in re futable bulk tanks. Try some of these sug gestions the next time your family goes camping and maybe you'll realize what you've been missing in the great outdoors. ***** iVJV) VAVWRflW"•V*' SUPPLEMENT TO McHENRY F> \INDEALER, PAGE 19 - JULY 10, 1974 Youngsters Can Learn How to Cook in Camp The temperature Is run ning high and your patience is running low with "moth er's little kitchen helper." Relax. Stall her by letting her help you with meal plans for that future camp ing trip and promise her that when you get to camp, she can be chief cook. Promises . .. Promises .. . but this is one you can keep because cooking in camp is usually easy enough for a child and it's the perfect chance for you to teach her a few elementary cooking skills without worrying about your kitchen floor. Keep the process simple by Introducing her to varia tions on foods that she can already fix, like adding fresh or wild fruit to pan cake batter or cooking eggs in a new way. Stick to a cold luncheon menu and those "camper's favorite" one pot meals for dinner. Teach her to solve that all time outdoor cooking problem, nothing ready at the s«une time, by using a propane camp stove. With t w o b i g b u r n e r s a n d a broiler grill combination like Zebco's Titan stove has, she can have bacon, eggs and toast ready all at once! • * * • People who hurry through life meet death much earlier.
