* mIL 1H omQjc iifi 3 5" 1 Dinner time provided one of the many pleasant memories enjoyed by Donna and her mother, Mrs. Carol llumann, during their six days and five nights spent in Jamaica. The Queen On Holiday To Jamaica The new queen is shown in a moment of relaxation. It was from the boat in background that she engaged in snorkeling. Donna Humann, 1974 Marine Festival queen, bubbled with enthusiasm last Wednesday as she talked about the vacation she and her mother enjoyed in Jamaica. The dream trip was her prize from the Chamber of Commerce for topping a field of fifteen contestants for the title of Miss McHenry. The Humanns left McHenry early June 26 from O'Hare field, and after a brief stop in Nassau, continued on, arriving at their destination at 4 in the afternoon. It was the opening of the tourist season in Jamaica. A few of the people talked what the queen referred to as "proper English", but she had trouble understanding many of the others. Donna said they denied it was another language, but most of them spoke so fast the meaning was lost. Some of their experiences she referred to as "scary". After dark, which did not Riome until well after 9 p.m., the Humanns stayed close to the hotel, where there was ample entertainment. Miss Humann smiled as she recalled the market places ev- dent throughout Jamaica. Street vendors "pounce on you" she said as they try to sell their wares. She compared the inflated prices on the street through her own experience in buying a calypso drum in a store for sixty cents which she found selling on the street later for $3. The pretty new title-holder described as beautiful, the many handmade items of the mountain people who place them in the market place. One of the outstanding memories of the week was the climb made by Donna and her mother up a 600-foot falls, accompanied by their guide. She also enjoyed snorkeling on the coral reefs and diving for shells in the Caribbean. A f treasured memento is a Queen Conch shell from which cameo 1 rings are made. The travelers described the attention they received as "great" and said it was a very relaxing vacation. They found it easy to become accustomed to Jamaican money. One dollar in American currency is worth eighty-eight cents in Jamaica. Tips, according to Donna, are a way of life on the island and strong hints are given to the naive traveler. The vacationers were especially impressed with the large sign that greeted their arrival. It read: WELCOME TO JAMAICA, MISS McHENRY. Donna tiumann, McHenry Marine Festival queen, smiles and waves gdpdbye to Chicago as she and her mother, Mrs. Carole llumann, board their Air Jamaica flight to Montego Bay. Her trip to Jamaica was first prize in the Miss McHenry contest which selected the queen to reign over the 1974 festival. Arrangements for the trip were made by William H. Dumalski. Low-carbohydrate diets, such as the currently popular diet described in Dr. Atkins' book "Diet Revolution", are not really new or revolutionary, says Nancy Moore, University of Illinois Extension home economist. These diets appear periodically in slightly different forms with different names. For example, in the past ten years we've seen "The Air Force Diet," "The calories Don't Count Diet," "The Drinking Man's Diet," and "The Stillman Diet." All of these diets stress, either directly or indirectly, limiting the amounts of carboydrate consumed -- that is, cutting down on the amounts of sugars and starches that are eaten. Carbohydrates are needed to completely burn or oxidize fat when it is used as an energy source. If carbohydrates are limited, fat is not completely burned by the body, and the unburned portion is passed out of the body as ketones. These substances contain some calories. Advocates of the low- carbohydrate diet regimes say you can waste enough energy this way to lose 5 to 10 pounds of body fat in just a week or two. However, scientific data shows you can't lose this much body fat in one week. At most you could only 'waste' 100 calories a day as ketones. Because a pound of body fat contains about 3,500 calories, it would take around Thank You. seems inadequate for the many expressions of kindness and friendship shown to us from all areas of McHenry County. We will always cherish these memories and never forget our many firends. Or. end Mrs. Peter H. The 5 or 10 pounds lost quickly after starting on a low- carbohydrate diet is not body fat It's body water. Low- Carbohydrate diets dehydrate the body, causing this temporary weight loss. A few persons who are able to stay on this type of diet for months and months may actually lose body fat. "But this usually isn't because of the so- called 'wasting effect' of the diet. Rather, it's because the day-in and day-out monotony of the diet causes the persons on it to actually cut down on the calories they consume. The lost weight is actually the result of fewer calories being consumed." There are some real dangers to your body when you go on low-carbohydrate diets. First, these diets usually are high in fat If a person is susceptible, diets high in saturated fats and cholesterol might possibly accelerate atherosclerosis or hardening of the arteries. Of course, they won't affect everyone this way, but we do know some persons must watch their intakes of saturated fats and cholesterol. Secondly, diets producing a ketogenic state may cause a significant rise of uric acid in the blood. This could be a problem with people who have, or have a tendency toward, gout. Thirdly, when ketones increase in the body, a person feels fatigues and lacks pep and energy. And ketones can reach dangerous levels in the body, causing unneeded stress. These diets also raise false hopes in the dieter. For most people it is just another fad diet to try and be discouraged with, and it delays any sensible dieting regime. A sensible diet supplies all the needed nutrients through recommended servings of foods from the four food groups - the meat, the milk, the fruits and vegetables, and the breads and cereal food group. And you must count calories so you will consume fewer than your body uses. You can actually lose body fat only calorie deficit. by incurring a For more information concerning foods and nutrition or menu planning, contact Nancy Moore at the Extension office in Woodstock or call 338- 4747. dPp/f/e Tout bine Chef Alain and Louise are pleased to announce their restaurant is now open Wednesday through Saturday for lunch and dinner.
