Sports Festival Eleven McHenry County Farm Bureau golfers will compete in the Illinois Farm Sports Festival state finals over the University of Illinois course at Savoy on Aug. 5 as a result of outstanding success in the District tourney last week. McHenry county golfers captured 11 of the 22 state finals berths leaving 15 other participating counties to battle for the 11 openings. DeKalb County Farm Bureau gained seven of those spots as 147 golfers competed at the Kishwaukee Country Club course, DeKalb. The McHenry county golfers advancing: Rodney Winn, Richmond, first in senior male, 50-60, with a 36-36-72, the day's best score and two over par. Gordon and Doris Jones, Harvard, first in mixed doubles, with a 179 total. Gordon shot an 85. George and Joyce Jackson, Woodstock, first, 185, and Bill and Virginia Hinner, Woodstock, second, in the husband-and-wife class. The Hinners had a 187 total. Betty Butenschoern, Marengo, second in individual lady, 104. * Elroy B. Butenschoern,Marengo, first in regular male, with a 36-42-78. Linnea Jones, Harvard, first in female, 17 and under, with a 105. McHenry Girls Attend GAA Leadership Camp » Two McHenry Girls have \ recently returned from a week 'away at the Northern GAA * Leadership Camp, which is > located on the shores of £ beautiful Lake Geneva near f Williams Bay, Wisconsin. - Cathy Connell and Donna CMunyon, representing »»McHenry high school, left on r Sunday, June 16 and returned jrhome on Saturday, June 22 with C lots of happy memories and * many new friends whom they ••will never forget. The week £ away went all too fast for these J girls, but they brought back many new ideas for our local GAA. Besides learning many new games and songs, they also won 1st place awards in the game tournaments and the annual talent show. GAA members from all over the state of Illinois attended the camp with approximately 150 girls in all. Our girls were chosen by their fellow GAA members, which is quite an honor. Both Cathy and Donna will serve on the GAA Board during the 1974-75 school year. Both will be Seniors at the McHenry West Campus in the coming school year. M.C.C. Dee Overton Tuesday July 9, the 2nd round of Country Club Match and ' Consolation, was a blistering day with golf to match played by all Classes. ^ Class C, Kris Newkirk 112 gross, a 51 on the front 9! Kris won her match from Carla Wright Hvho said 'I didn't have a chance, it was 2 against 1 all the way'! Low Net in Class C was Fran Weyland with an 80p, who also won her match to go on into the semi finals. In Class B 3 gals shot in the 40's for 9, Mary Ann Falson 100 Low Gross, Nancy Wilkins 47 on the front 9, Low Net of 72. Nancy is a recent Class C golfer passing thru Class R-on her way to Class A, shooting for the 'most improved golfer' of the year. In Class A, 8 out of 10 shot in the 40's for 9 and 7 out of 8 were in the 90's. However the most exciting match of the day had to be Joan Buss and Judy Smithson. Both gals had 44 on the first 9 and shot 46-47 on the back 9. Joan won with a 90 gross - 69 net over Judy's 91 gross - 70 net. Hey gals, save some of this fine golf for the 'Labor Day Event'. Judy, Carol Cooney and Nell Fidler birdied No. 16. Carol shot a 92 and Nell a 95. Lettie Busscher and Alvina Yopp birdied No. 6, Alvina shot a 91. Liz Nolan deuced No. 9. In Class C the tables were turned when "The Great Birds of Paradise" got Carol Bolger. Better luck next week Carol and remember to stay away from those trees. Speaking of luck! Floss O'Connell, who shot a 94 Tuesday, called into the Wally Phillips Show Thursday to answer a few questions to qualify to play in the Pro Ladies and Amateur Event on July 22, Floss will represent McHenry Country Club in this event at Dominian Country Club at Woodale. An amateur is sponsored by a $250 minimum donation in this event as it is a fund raiser for The Illinois Child and Family Services. The Pro ladies are playing the USGA Women's Open at LaGrange on the 18th thru the 21st. Good luck to Floss in her golf and all this event entitles her to attend. The Master Property Owners Association of Wonder Lake has stated that starting on the weekend of July 20 they will enforce their recreational decal system. This ordinance was passed at the August 1973 convention by a large majority vote, that all boats MUST display this decal. Decals can be purchased from your subdivision secretary. For any further information contact June Novak at 653-6093. According to Illinois State Law nothing should be placed along side of the state registration. Each winner will receive a blue victor's ribbon at the end of the day and in August a fine trophy. David Halverson Invited To Shoot In U.S. Championships The National Rifle Association of America today announced that David Halverson of McHenry, Illinois has been invited to attend the 14th United States International Shooting Championships, shotgun phase, in Chardon, Ohio, July 9-21. The championships are being held to determine the United States team to the 41st World Shooting Championships scheduled for Switzerland in September. Mr. Halverson, a shotgun shooter, will be trying for one of the 50 spots on the U.S. squad scheduled to compete against shooters from 75 countries in the World Championships. ' McHENRY AREA INDUSTRIAL LEAGUE 12 INCH SOFTBALL Scores for games played Tuesday, July 9: Jake's beat the Outlaws twice - 12 to 1 and 10 to 7; Phillip's 66 won over the Riverside Bake Shop in two games - 16 to 9 and 11 to 10; Rusty Nail won two games fro|ri the Brake Parts team - 25 ta^&nd 23 to 4. Jerry's Phillip's 66, after a two week layoff, pulled themselves from sixth place all the way into third as a result of important victories last week over the Riverside Bake Shop and the Outlaws. They now find themselves having a good shot at second as they play the Swanson Chalet this Thursday in a single game. A victory over the Chalet could pull bot teams even if Phillip's can tak two from Morton Chemical on Tuesday, July 16. Other games this week have first place Jake's playing last place Brake Parts for the two games needed to clinch first place. After Tuesday's doubleheader Brake Parts will have a Thursday night single game vs. McHenry Hospital. Rusty Nail finds itself in a do­ or-die situation as they must win over Morton Chemical on Thursday to keep any hope for making a playoff spot open. There is one game scheduled next Tuesday, July 23, as the Outlaws will face Riverside Bake Shop. Len Kozicki's club needs a victory here or else they too are eliminated from making the playoffs. Standings after Thursday, July 18: W L GB Game two was a close game as Riverside Bake Shop came from eight runs behind narrowing the margin to one run. They threatened in the bottom of the final inning to push across the tying run,. however a fine Phillip's 66 J defense prevented the Bake Shop from scoring. Wnek, Czerneda and McQueen were the mainstays in the 66 defense. Roy Hoffman homered with the bases full for the winners. Mike Bauer, Jim Wetteland and John Little hit homeruns for the Bake Shop.
