Young, Ex tension Adviser, Agriculturist, McHenry County) FARM VISIT DAY- McHenry county and seven other nor thern Illinois counties are participating in Farm Visit day programs Sunday, June 15. Hosting visitors in McHenry county are Robert and David Gardner's dairy farm and Donald and Richard Stoxen's beef finishing operation. Visiting hours are noon until 4 p.m This is an excellent educational opportunity for urban families to visit a ' working farm. I think it is important for children to un derstand where and how the food they eat is produced. Following are travel directions: Gardner Dairy Farm - located in northeastern McHenry county near Solon Mills. Take U.S. Route 12 to seven miles north of Fox Lake; turn west on West Solon road and go one-fourth mile or take Illinois Route 31 to seven miles north of McHenry; turn east on West Solon road and go one and one-half miles. Stoxen Beef Farm - located in northwestern McHenry county near Lawrence. Take Illinois Route 14 or Illinois Route 23 to Harvard; at Harvard,on Route 14. turn west on Illinois 173 and go three miles to White Oaks road, turn north on White Oaks Road and go two miles to Graf road; turn east on Graf and go one-half mile to Maxon road; turn north on Maxon Road and go one mile. Follow the orange arrows. Cooperating with the host farm families in this educational opportunity are the Young Farmers committee and Women's committee of the McHenry County Farm Bureau and the McHenry County Agriculture Extension council of the University of Illinois Cooperative Extension Service. OFFICE WILL MOVE- Our Executive Extension council, which represents our three program councils, has decided after much study to move our office. We will move to space in the Farm Bureau building, 11909 McConnell road, Wood stock, June 11. We hope to complete the move of equip ment in one day, but it will take several days to get things in order. Our Executive council feels the new office location will allow our office to better serve all McHenry county residents because the new office will be on the ground floor, have ac cess to a convenient large meeting room and kitchen, and ample parking facilities. FUNDING EXTENSION OFFICE - Office is a field office of the University of Illinois College of Agriculture. We are here to provide a doorway to the resources of the University to all residents of McHenry county. Funds to operate it come from three sources, federal, state and local Federal and state monies out of the University of Illinois budget pay the salaries of the four University of Illinois advisers and two secretaries serving McHenry county. The university budget also provides a portion of the money for local telenet and travel expenses. These items will add up to $64,623.00 for our 1974-75 fiscal year which ends June 30. In addition to salaries of University staff members in McHenry county, travel and telenet, the University also pays the postal service for the penalty mail we send out, the pamphlets we distribute and cost of supplying specialist and administrative support to us from the Urbana campus. Local monies are raised to meet expenses associated with the operation of tjie local office. The McHenry County board contributed $8,400.00; McHenry County Farm Bureau, $2,400; McHenry County Homemakers Extension association, $2,262.00, and McHenry County 4-H Federation, $1,850. In addition to fhese local sources, the State of Illinois provides one dollar for each three dollars raised locally to operate the Extension office. This $19,883. was used to pay the following expenses: rent, telephone, office supplies, travel, temporary services, equipment, program and teaching aids, and printing and photo. Our Executive Extension council is now working on the 1975-76 local budget. CROP CONDITION - After several weeks where farmers could only work in fields one- half day at a time, we finally got some decent weather for planting. Most of McHenry County's corn and soybeans acreage is planted. VEGETABLE GARDENS - Many people are going to grow vegetables in home gardens this year. Our office has distributed approximately 1,000 Illinois Vegetable Garden Guides this spring. LAND USE POLICY - The McHenry County Farm Bureau and our office plan to co sponsor a meeting on land use policies, June 23, 8-10 p.m at the Farm Bureau auditorium There will be two speakers. John Quinn, University of Illinois specialist in Agricultural Economics, will discuss alternative land use policies and their probable consequences. Herb Klynstra, director of the Department of Iyocal Government with the I l l i n o i s A g r i c u l t u r a l association, will discuss his farm organization's proposals to the Illinois Legislature on land use planning COMING EVENTS June 15 - Farm Visit Day - Call Extension office for details.
