Hold Family Reunion On The Grand Scale When Mr. and Mrs. Josie Smith of 4309 W. Crystal Lake road, McHenry made plans to attend a reunion of her family in Putnam, 111., over the Memorial day holiday, little did they realize that it would be history-making event. It was eight years ago that Mrs. Smith's sister, Imelda Henkins Holler of Lacon, decided to plan a family reunion. When she checked the 1976 calendar and discovered May 30 would fall on Friday, she selected that three-day weekend for the event. Little did she realize that by the time the year arrived there would be question as to when Memorial day would be celebrated. tended Northern Illinois University where he studied English. The couple prepared the buffet and made their wedding cake which was decorated with wildflowers. The bride gave each mother a yellow rose with a handkerchief made from the different types of material in her wedding dress. They will reside in Renton, Wash., just outside of Seattle. Out of town guests included the bride's grandmother, Mrs. Lucy Farra, Ms. Ethelyn Farra, Mr. and Mrs. Dean Farra and Mr. and Mrs. Delbert Stauffer, all of Dayton, Ohio. Others came from Portsmouth, Ohio, Columbus, Ohio, Michigan, Iowa, Wisconsin and various parts of Illinois. Eight years ago, when the first reunion was held, she contacted sixty-eight families and there were' 220 people who attended from seven states, including Alaska. But that was only one branch of the Henkins family. This time it was decided to include all the descendants of John Henry Henkins, who landed in Chester, Pa., Sept. 25, 1752. This year about 450 were present. They came from Wisconsin, Washington, D.C., Indiana, Ohio, West Virginia, Alaska, Colorado, North Dakota, Minnesota, Michigan, Illinois, Missouri, Florida and California. Ms. Holler said her en thusiasm for genealogy has developed only since the first reunion was planned. Her organizational skills she credits to many years of membership in the Homemakers Extension association. Construction paper was used for name tags, but when she ran out of colors, the resour ceful Ms. Holler made some in different shapes. A brief family history was compiled and put into paper back form for those interested, and a family wheel informed each person attending what branch of the family he came from. Ms. Holler doesn't suggest that other people undertake a reunion on the same scale, but adds that possibly in this bicentennial year, some might like to try. LaLeche league was founded in 1956 when a few mothers started getting together to help each other by discussing how to breastfeed their babies. Un fortunately, in modern society, some natural functions such as breastfeeding and childbirth are no longer automatic, and many mothers who wish to nurse their babies and feel that it is best, find it difficult to do so. League members learn some techniques to ensure successful breastfeeding, and how to avoid or overcome problems, plus the importance of a secure emotional relationship between mother and baby. Pregnant or nursing mothers and their babies or anyone interested is welcome to attend meetings and use the League lending library and literature. For more information about meetings or for individual help with breastfeeding, call Mrs. Richard (Marcia) McGowan in McHenry, or Mrs. Roger (Cathy) Keinz in Wonder Lake.
