POETS CORNER • ••ft Valerie Phalin Graduates From Nursing School Legal Notice _ WELCOME STRANGER Welcome stranger in this our land ' you come from so far awav..„ The shape of your eyes us so different your language is hard to understand, but we welcome you hwe, tp stay... You had to leave your country without your own free will.... In order to live and work in peace and without the fear.... of being killed. So many who live in these United States seem to forget, today.... how their forefathers walked a long time ago.... also as strangers.... thru the Goldfen Gate.... i They too came and began a new life over here.... for many of them there was no other way They too, just wanted to be free.... and they made this country what it is today. Yes, it was the hand and mind of every single emigrant.... who built this continent, America, that is why we all should welcome you, still a stranger.... no matter if you traveled.... from near or far.... We should not close our door for you just because you are different from us. If we do.... then the Statue of Liberty, is not true and the slogan... "give me your tired, your poor".... these words must be written, then into dust.... by Maria Heiser Grandma GRANDMASEZ It appears t' this granny that our independent way o' life, in these United States o' America, seems t' be threatened by organized labor unions, an' such. It stirs th' bottom o' me soul, t' hear that me next-door "neighbor ain't free t' come in an' cut me hair, 'r serve me in any way she may ha' a mind, wi'out danger o' breakin' some con cocted rules, an' regulations, t' control every dollar a body c'n muster, t' keep up his ap pearance, an' pride in himself. Me thinks th' people ought t' git on this, an' make it im possible f'r some people, t' destroy th' very attitude among good folk, that built this country, th' friendly attitude o' neighbor toward neighbor What if some crazy union law, long ago, made it im possible f'r folks t' git t'gether an' build a house f'r a feller who'd lost his in a fire, 'r storm, 'r other. Seems t' me that things 're a gittin' 'way out o' line, when a body cain't do a, favor f'r friends, a helpin' t' stretch th' meager amount, some folk have f'r a little cosmetic attention, now 'n again, wi'out breakin' some union rule, 'r regulation. Seems t' this ol' lady, things 're a goin' a bit too far, wi' controls on this 'n that. Wonder what'll be next! First thing ye know, they'll be a raidin' our homes, t' see if we're a breaking' any o' th' rules, as in th' instance o' th' four ol' ladies, raided in their home, while playin' cards. What kind o' a "Gestapo" are we allowin' t' take o'er, destroyin' this American way o' life, o' which we ha'been proud f'r these two- hundred years, an' more. I'll warrant ye, if we had unionized labor in th' tender years o' our loved country, we'd ne'er ha'had th' rapid development we've known. In times past, there was incentive t' produce, in fine quality o' workmanship, no matter what the line. Employers profited by Offerin' th' public a bill o' goods, t' please th' market, an' competitive business tended t' increase effort t' be th' best, in what-so-ever field o' endeavor was employed. I'll grant ye, some employers took ad vantage o' th' cheaper labor costs, and' folks were unhappy. Out o' th' discontent, came th' organized labor unions, an' associations. Inflation b'gan t' grow, wi' unnatural increases in wages. No one wanted t' protest, f'r selfish reasons, an' folks lived "Higher on th' hog," 'n e'er b'fore, in this country, an' in th' world, f'r that matter. It hain't been healthy f'r this, our b'loved country, 'r f'r th' rest o' th' world, either.
