It takes a smart kitchen cabinet to pass this test In most kitchens, the cabinets work as hard as the cook. Kitchen cabinets do a variety of jobs--from pro viding storage and coun ter top space to setting the room's decorative tone. A sufficient number of ac cessible cabinets makes a kitchen more convenient. Not surprisingly, new cab inets rank as a key factor in kitchen remodeling. A recent survey by the Bureau of Building Mar keting Research reports that 75 per cent of profes sionally-remodeled kitch ens feature new cabinets. Cabinet installation is also included in about 40 per cent of kitchens remodeled by do-it-yourselfers. Ei ther way, cabinet selec tion can play a big part in successful upgrading. A basic factor in kitchen cabinet selection--and one no remodeler should over look--is the cabinet's per formance ability* The Na tional Kitchen Cabinet Association points out that kitchen cabinets must provide long-term daily WELL-SUITED FOR SPRING FASHION . . . How well the cabinets are constructed, the amount of storage they hold, their strength, ease of operation, and resist ance to staining should all be considered. NKCA sug gests that cabinets be chosen to withstand a va riety of kitchen "trauma" -- from normal slams and spills to extraordinary abuse -- such as_children standing on cabinet doors to reach high shelves. Although style, color, placement and size of kitchen cabinets may vary, performance shouldn't, says NKCA. Therefore, the Association recommends use of kitchen cabinets that carry an NKCA cer tification seal. The seal certifies that the cabinet meets stringent construc tion and performance standards of the American National Standards Insti tute (ANSI) for kitchen .and vanity_ cabinets. The standards apply to manu factured, factory-finished kitchen and vanity cabi nets. Before they can carry the NKCA seal, cabinets must pass endurance and quality tests conducted by an independent testing laboratory. The tests cov er a wide range of per formances. For instance, it's required that shelves be sufficiently supported, that swinging doors have a device to hold them closed, that doors be prop erly aligned and operate freely, and that the cabi net finish be clean and free of disfiguring marks. In addition, cabinets must be able to withstand above-average weights on shelves and in drawers, as well as the impact of drop ped cans and other objects. There is even a test for the special abuse suffered by base cabinet doors -- from being closed by adult knees to being hit with children's tricycles. The range of choice has jumped in a decade from 10 to 12 basic styles and colors to more than 9,000 different designs; AWard winners this year--chosen by fashion and beauty edi tors -- are softer-colored, more sculptured, more complementary to the complexion than those of previous years. Primary colors have been replaced by smokey grey, soft lilac, amber, beige peach and brown, some times in subtle combina tions, always distinctly . different from the old horn-rimmed looks. Shapes are generally big, but not giant. Geometries have given way to soft ened edges. Even square frames seem rounded. Crystal lenses are replac ing opaque shades. Newest trend in trims concentrates on the bridge and the temples, with metal circles, bands or discs imbedded in plastic frames. Children's styles are de signed for children -- not pared-down versions of .mother's or dad's. Girls' glasses lean toward petal shapes in pretty, feminine colors. Boys' metal frames are heavier, departing from the thin wire look. The aviator goggle con tinues as a classic, espe cially for the young. Likely Many a girl's negative per sonality has been developed in a dark room. -Coast Guard Magazine. Evaluation Program At Beaches Started The McHenry County Department of Health has started its evaluation program of swimming beaches within the County with first samples collected May 26 and 27. The samples are being run in the McHenry County Department of Health laboratory which has recently been certified by the Illinois Department of Public Health for running water samples. The department will be collecting samples Monday or Tuesday of each week throughout the swimming season and will be collecting a sample from nearly every beach in the county each week. By collecting the samples on Monday and Tuesday, the analysis can be completed by Wednesday afternoon so that the citizens of McHenry county can be make aware of the condition of the waters of the beaches prior to the weekend. The criteria used by the McHenry County Department of Health to determine if the waters in a beach are satisfactory or unsatisfactory for swimming are the criteria set up by the Illinois Depart ment of Public Health in their rules and regulations con cerning recreational areas and recreational waters. Those standards are one thousand total coliform organisms per one hundred milliliters of water and-or one hundred fecaj coliform organisms in one hun dred milliliters of water. Any time a sample has more than one thousand coliform or one hundred fecal coliform per one hundred milliliters of water that swimming area is considered unsatisfactory. However, the standards recognize the variability present in natural swimming areas and specify that before a beach is posted these standards must be ex ceeded by two consecutive samples. Also, the standards specify that any time two consecutive samples exceed five thousand total coliform per one hundred milliliters and-or five hundred fecal coliform per one hundred milliliters the beach shall be physically closed to restrict persons from having access to those waters. In the future, the department will issue information con cerning the results of sampling during the week specifying those beaches which were found to be unsatisfactory during that week and also specifying those beaches which have had two consecutive u n s a t i s f a c t o r y s a m p l e s collected from them and which the department will be posting as unsafe for swimming. Those beaches found to be unsatisfactory at the time of the last reading June 3 were Villa Vaupell No. 2. Lakemoor Beaches No. 1 and, McCullom Lake West Shore beach and Lakeland Park Beach No. 1.
