HIAWATHA PAGEANT The June 19 performance of the Hiawatha Pageant will be a benefit night for the Sybaquay Girl Scout council. Girl Scouts of Kachine Neighborhood- Wonder Lake and Richmond are members of Sybaquay Council. Although the per formance runs two consecutive weekends, Sybaquay Council would like to invite everyone to join the Girl Scouts and their families and friends to attend on June 19. Tickets for both reserved and non-reserved seating are available at the Sybaquay Council office, 15 Ziegler Court, Elgin. Tickets may also be ordered by mail or by calling the office at 312-741-5521. If you haven't seen the wonderful pageant of "Hiawatha" performed by the Big Timber and Kwo-Ne-She Dancers, you are missing one of the most unique presen tations in the whole country. The enactment of Longfellow's beautiful epic takes place in an amphitheater setting beside a small lake on the grounds of Camp Big Timber. Big Timber is located 5'2 miles northwest of Elgin on Big Timber Road west of Route 31. The originator of the pageant, Carl Parlaska (Old Par), begins each performance at 8:25 with the narration of the poem while the dancers act out the various scenes. The colorful Indian Village, the precision canoeing and the pulsating Indian ceremonial dances keep the tempo moving constantly. All the costumes are authentic to the minutest detail and are valued in the thousands of dollars. The last regular meeting of the troop was turned into a parent party night and moms and dads joined their Cadette Scouts for an evening of scout fun. In Scout fashion, the evening began with a flag ceremony, Sergeant-at-arms, Vicki Raab, directed the color guard, Kay Ann Schuler, Daphne Bruce, Sherri Grauman and Jane Woodlock, in the presentation and posting of our country's colors. Mistress of ceremonies for the evening, Kim Vitellaro, took charge of the program which has been prepared by the girls. Sue Berg and Diana Hay began the program with a modern jazz dance to music from Godspell. Kay Ann Schuler, Jane Woodlock and Daphne Bruce saluted the coming bicentennial with patriotic selections of the flute. The dramatic highlight of the evening was a comedy skit entitled "All About Mothers" depicting mothers in all sizes, shapes and styles from the Cave Mother to the Mother of the Future. Sue Narowetz served as announcer, and Lori Harney, Patty Coleman, Donna Berlin and Pam Berg did the honors as running com mentators for the skit. Por traying the various mothers were Diane Justen, Cindy Crocco, Heather Fitzgerald, Joy Cope, Laura Eising, Jill Baker, Jodi Beyer, Diana Hay, Nicky Narowetz and Mary Lance. Following the skit, a Court of Awards was held and the Scouts were presented with the Challenge of the Arts and Membership Stars. Swimmers badges were presented to Joy Cope, Cindy Crocco, Laura Eising, Sherri Grauman, Mary Beth Noble and Jane Woodlock. Patty Coleman was awarded the Life Saver badge. In a special presentation the Challenge of Knowing Myself and the Challenge of the Girl Scout Promise were awarded to eighth grade Scouts, Lori Harney, Patty Coleman, faaurita Lance, Vicki Raab, Sue feerg and Nicky Narowetz. Troop Leader, Lucy Coleman, having been with these Scouts for several years as their leader, commended their good work and growth as Cadette Girl Scouts and young adults. These girls now have the option of continuing their Scouting careers in the Senior Scout program, just recently begun in Wonder lake, which is open to all high school girls in the area. The Troop surprised its Assistant Leader, Patsy Justen, with a special gift in thanks for all her hard work and efforts for the Troop this year. The Scouts and parents then enjoyed several games and concluded the evening with refreshments. ELEVENTH BIRTHDAY To celebrate his eleventh birthday, Doug Maris, son of Eugene and Donna Maris, entertained some of his friends at a bowling party on Monday, June 9.
