Just as we started to watch the Cubs - Montreal game Tuesday, the electricity went off -- out -- dead. Suppose you noticed the deadlines published in box on the sports page. That's how it is. And it applies to our own copy. Bill DeVreis is a mixed up kid. Maybe it's the heat. Why would he head for Arkansas when his Cubs are in Montreal? It looks like the All-Star baseball balloting will have to go back to the players. Teams like the Cubs and Sox are being left out in the cold just because they aren't drawing the crowds at games in comparison to some other cities. Each team should be represented. Instead of a popularity poll, it would be a great honor to be chosen by players of all teams in the league. Whoever said "Give it back to the fans" didn't know how it would turn out. We wonder, too. r i McHenry Area 12-Inch Softball Had a ride through southern Wisconsin recently. It's so peaceful in the country. Those little, old towns in trigue us. Golf in the U.S Open found some of the old favorites down the list. Lou Graham, the, winner in a playoff, is 37 years old. John Mahaffey is 27. He has 10 years to make it. The Medinah course must be a tough one. Trees, water and uphill greens all made it look like a place for the experts. People ask if we are going to travel now that we are retired. Sure are! This week we drove to Elgin, Woodstock, Johnsburg and Ringwood. "I'm looking for adventure, excitement, beautiful women!" cried the young man to his father as he prepared to leave home, "and don't try to stop me. I'm on my way." "Who's trying to stop you?" his Dad said. "I'll go with you."--The Beacon, Barrie, Ontario, Canada. We aren't having any luck with lottery tickets. Eddie Bimbo promised sure winners. This week we bought them from Junior Bimbo. Now we'll see if he put a special blessing on them. Our friend "Zeke" Bacon told us to watch those Cleveland Indians this year. We tried, but can't find them in the stan dings. Now, we can just hear him say, "What about your Sox?" They say a pitcher has only so many pitches in his arm. Makes us wonder why they use so many in warmups and waste pitches. With so much smoke, there must be some fire. Reports have it that Ron Santo wants to buy the Sox. Then we heard Owner John Allyn say he wouldn't sell to 'anybody who would upset the organization. General Manager Hemond and Manager Tanner would have to stay. That kind of puts out the fire. McHenry Country Club In the finals of the Director's Tournament played at the club on Sunday, June 22, in Flight 1, Gary Adams defeated Art Jackson on the 18th hole. The turning point of the match was on the 15th green when Gary knocked in a long putt and Art missed from a few feet out. Flight 2 winner was John Steinbach over Dick Freund in a match that went to the 19th hole. It was a tough one for Dick to lose as he played well enough to win, but John was equal to the task and also played a great game. Tom Burke birdied the 17th and 18th holes to win 1 up over Fred Ballstaedt in Flight 3. Fred had pars on the last two holes and deserved a better fate, hut Tom is one of the fiercest competitors in the club and never gives up. Don Wattles' comment was, "it was the best game I've played this year". The "best game" being an 84 as Don defeated Ace Oja on the 15th hole. Perhaps an 84 does not sound too impressive until you realize that Mr. Wattles has a 19 handicap. Figure that one out on your pocket calculator. Members should sign up for the 4th of July event, a Ten nessee Dog Fight affair with teams comprised of three men and a gal. * * • * There are any number of people who will do great things if they can do them without exertion. It finally has been proven, a few million times, that it's harder to keep one's mouth closed than open. By Pat Wirtz Rusty Nail has taken over first place in the McHenry Area 12-inch slow-pitch league. At the half way point in the season Rusty Nail holds a slim half game edge over Phillip's 66. The Nail won two games over Old Bridge in a Monday night doubleheader and knocked the Old Bridge from the top spot. Scores were 9 to 8 and 12 to 7 in two good ball games marred only by the injury of Bridge catcher Tom McCormack who was hurt in a freak play. Phillip's 66 kept right up there as they won a come-from- behind 11 to 9 decision over Wetteland Decorating. Game two was deadlocked at 6 runs each when the game was suspended because of darkness. House of David won a pair over SPA, 10-0 and 14-7. Last year's champs seem to have recovered from 3 losses in a "row and are back on the winning track. Standings as of June 24: W L Rusty Nail 8 2 Phillip's 66 7 2 Old Bridge 7 3 House of David 7 3 S P A . 3 5 Swanson Chalet 3 6 Wetteland Decorating 2 6 The Stand 0 10 Glancing at the standings shows a tight race for first place has developed with each of the top four teams having been in first pla ? at least once during the season. S P A. has a distant shot at a playoff spot. They have played in two suspended games and if they can win those plus beat any of the top four teams in the next few weeks S.P.A. could make it into the post season com petition. Swanson Chalet lost their first six games while Wetteland has lost their last six games. Both teams are capable of beating the top four however they must really put it together starting this Wednesday. Rusty Nail took sole possession of first place on Monday with two victories over Old Bridge. Game one saw The Nail come from behind in the third inning and again in the fifth after Old Bridge had tied the score at 7 runs each. Old Bridge managed one final run in the seventh as Rusty Nail held on the win 9 to 8. Rusty Nail was led by Gary Schmitt, Gary Busse, Dennis Schmitt and Bill Comstock each getting two hits. Gary Schmitt and Len Ackermann both had long three-base hits accounting for a RBI each. Dave Sundby and Pete Smith both had two hits for Old Bridge, both players also hitting 3 run homers. John Connell, Matt Oik, Frank Lorch and Steve Major contributed 2 hits apiece. Bill Comstock, Gary Miller, and Dennis Schmitt added 2 hits each. Pat McQueeney had a big three run homer for Old Bridge and added a fine defensive game at shortstop but it was not enough as Old Bridge lost a 3 run lead in the bottom of the first inning and never quite came back. Pete Smith and Steve Major both added 2 hits each for Old Bridge. Phillip's 66 had to come from 5 runs behind after 4 full in nings of play to beat Wetteland Decorating 11 to 9. Mark Frederick drove in what became the deciding runs in a 5 run sixth inning; his hit drove in two runs. Jack Adams had a 3 run homer while Jerry Bellak had a perfect day with 4 for 4 including a pair of doubles. For Wetteland Steve Drake and Tom Schmidt had two hits each while Joe Lafontaine added a long home run and Jim Wetteland a two run double. Game two was suspended after 7 innings with the score tied 6 to 6. The game will be concluded August sixth before the regularly scheduled contest. Phillip's 66 030 035 0-11 Wetteland Decorating 103 401 0 - 9 The bats were silent for S.P.A. as they could manage only 3 hits off Greg Freund. Final score was lOtoO, House of David the winner. John Hiller had 3 hits and played an ex cellent left field for the winner making three diving, tumbling catches. Terry Godina provided a perfect 3 hits for 3 times up including a double and home run. Greg Freund had a 3 run homer, Gene Hester added two hits including a triple, and C.J. Ludford drove in a pair of runs with a hit and a sacrifice. S.P.A. Come on down!! Sid Norton, McHenry, won a heat race in the All American Late Model Sportsman stock car racing at the Lake Geneva Raceway in one of the Sunday night Battle of the Speedways events. Cars from several tracks converge on the Lake Geneva Raceway on Sunday nights and so far Sid and his brother Duke have given good account of themselves and their Saturday night based track at Wilmot. Duke Norton won the opening night's feature. In addition to the Wilmot track, cars from the Rockford Speedway, Waukegan, Jefferson and HalesCorners Speedways are in action with the Lake Geneva regulars on Saturday nights. American [ Legion Baseball On Wednesday, June 18, the McHenry American Legion baseball team hosted the defending champions Crystal Lake at their new diamond located at the Legion Post off Ringwood road. Despite the rain-soaked field and the fact that the Crystal Lake pitcher had a 1.9 ERA at MCC, the McHenry Nine put up a good fight - losing 5-2. Collecting the only 3 hits for McHenry were Jeff Damiani who doubled in the 2nd, Steve Mai who singled in the 3rd and later scored on a passed ball, and Ron Himpelmann who singled in the 4th. Scoring the only other run for McHenry was John Miller who was walked, and after ad vancing on an error by the pitcher, was scored by Him- pelmann's hit. Himpelmann was the losing pitcher, yielding all 5 runs. Miller did a fine job of relief in the 6th and 7th, giving up no runs or hits. BOXSCORES McHENRY ab r h Jaskowiakcf 4 0 0 S.
