Joined a jolly group Friday night at the Johnsburg Com munity Club hall for the windup of the Third Annual Joe Frett Memorial Daw ,One of the first persons we rubbed elbows with was Howie Freund, a former Tiger ball player who could uo it all. We can never forget the last play of the game when John sburg won the state cham pionship in Elgin. A sharp grounder was hit to second where Howie gobbled it up like a vacuum cleaner and fired to first base. We said then that it couldn't have been hit to a better man. Sat down to the table with Joe Etten, "Schmaltz" Miller and John Herdrich. 'Twas time to eat -- and eat we did. Those Johnsburg girls believe in feeding their men. Harry May, former bat boy for Joe Frett, was the M.C. and a good one. The program moved along rgal good. Roddie Winn was there and was sorry he didn't rib the old Tigers by telling how suc cessful Joe Frett was as a manager in spite of not having much material to work with. Harry recalled the days when Hank Hiller and S.I.H. sat in the press box to announce and score games. Saturday night was one of the most pleasant outings in our book. An invitation to join with the Junior Chamber of com merce for th^ir annual in stallment of officers and awards night was a surprise. » The enthusiasm, laughter and good fellowship shown by the small group was something to send you home with a smile on your lips and a song in your heart 'Twas fun Of course, our wives were there. RESURFACE NOW WITHOUT REMOVING "Lectroglaz" is the name of a new process for resurfacing old built-in bathtubs and ceramic tile. It can also be used for repairing chips incurred in installation of a new«tub, or to change the fixture's color. It can be done on location, without removal. Its process merges compounds to the original ^bathtub enamel, thus developing a permanent molecular bond, reportedly more acid and chemical resistant than the original finish. Its manufacturers say that the "lectroglazing" process will cut down on staining effects of water-dissolved minerals, otturof the major causes of bathtub deterioration. H. E. Buch & Sons, Inc. Who holds the record for career base hits9 '» WASHINGTON, D.C.--The surprising weakness of the' ' St. Louis Cardinals thus far is epitomized1 by the fall of Bob Gibson, the great Red- bird twirler for two decades. Bullet Bob was recently demoted from the starting rotation. The Cards won nextj day, 1-0. Maybe Gibby will come back--one hopes so-- but \the Cards were up against it . " . To this reporter they look ed good in spring training Gibson is 39, perhaps over the hill. One's thoughts drift nat urally enough to the last great Cardinal year, 1968, when Gibson won two World Series games. The pitcher who beat him in the seventh- game finale is also getting old and not as sharp as he once was. But Mickey Lo- lich is still in the rotation-- and still setting records at Detroit. It 's painful to see stars like Gibson (and Lolich) come to the end of the trail, or .near it . " 4-H Has important Meanings To Members What is 4-H and\vhat does it mean to young people who have been a part of 4-H? The 4-H King ancPQueen court members explain. "To me, 4-H is learning new things and meeting new peopfi. The skills I have learned through my 4-H projects, which ranged from Foods and Clothing to Beef and Swine, has helped me now and will be of great help to me in the future." "4-H is a "golden opportunity to build the future. It is a chance to meet arid learn tfhat other people are like. A chance to have fun, at camps and softball games." "It helped develop me morally, physically, and mentally into what I hope is a mature responsible, self reliant member of society." "When I was 9 it meant the excitement of preparing my animals and showing them at the Fair. At 13, I started to become involved at the county level through 4-H Federation. I worked at Clothing and foods Judging and at any place I could be of help. What I have learned most from 4-H is that the more involved a person becomes, the more^fliisfaction oen gets and the more fun there is to be had." "4-H to me is a beginning, it builds your character and makes you more aware of what is happening in the world. 4-H has taught me to go into a group of people and be able to talk. In 4-H I found how much fun you can have in learning." "In the nine years I have been in 4-H f I 've learned and experienced many things. 4-H has also provided me with a great stepping block toward a career." "Not only has 4-H taught me how to raise top dairy cattle, but also on becoming a better person through participation in meetings, leadership activities, 44i_project demonstrations, public speaking, and many „ other 4-H events." "One of the greatest satisfactions of 4-H can come from teaching other 4-H'ers what you have learned." "This is my last year in 4-H, but because of all I have gained I hope to continue in 4-H as a leader. You are never too old for 4-H. for in 4-H, we learn& 'lo make the best better." This is what 4-H means to the 4-H members who make up the 1975 McHenry county 4-H King and Queen cpurt. Free Time Learning- Recreation When school lets out, children go home. How to spend free time happily and productively is a challenge for students and parents. * Even children with inventive imaginations can run out of ideas on how to spend free and summer time. And parents may also find their idea reservoir running dry. Although children shout hooray as school doors close, many parents face the long summer with a kind of dread. Kids will now be home for a long time. First in line for free time projects might be finding some new solutions to the old. age- old. problems of breakdown in communication and warfare between the generations. Next, and complementing verbal discussion, are the activities needed to keep brains and hands functioning and feeling good. To find new lines in com munication with children, parents will be interested in the approaches of Haim Ginott in the book, "Between Parent and Child." and Thomas Gordon in "Parent Effectiveness Training." Free time is also the time for important lessons that schools don't or can't teach during the academic year After a year of having to conform to the pace of a group and the ideas of a teacher, a child needs to acquire a sense of his own individuality. Start by helping a child figure out his own interests. If he already has some, fine. Help him-her pursue them with a minimum of adult interference and authority. Many children, however, are so used to depending on the school to tell them what to do that they don't know what they want to do even wherf given choices by parents. These children need practice in thinking and planning on their owri. Set up a Vacation-Time Bulletin board. Tape a piece of blank paper on the refrigerator for everyone to jot down suggestions of things to do in the next week. Encourage children to post their ideas for family activities, jot down their thoughts, and clip articles that interest them Planning to Extension Comments (By George J. Young, Ex tension Adviser. Agriculture, McHenry County) , rTree Insects - Many people have called me concerning their soft maple trees that appear to be decorated with popcorn. This insect is cottony maple scale and you may- remember I discussed it in this column two weeks ago. The egg hatch should be complete approximately July 1 in McHenry county. .The young scales then migrate to the leaves, where they settle and suck food from the leaf tissue. The infestations may be heavy enough to kill twigs, branches, limbs, and occasionally, entire trees. Fortunately, cottony maple scale has many natural .enemies which help control it. These natural enemies are twice-stabbed lady beatles, parasitic wasp and aphid lions, jowever, at times, sprays of ilathion may be needed. To effective, malathion should be applied after the eggs hatch. pat < Hon F ne ( 7HE PHILADELPHIA PHILS PAID A $30,000 BONUS TO A M~ YEAR OLD PUERTO RJCAN BOY... Over 500 visitors toured the Gardner dairy farm and nearly 400 toured Stoxen's beef feeding operation. Soybean Stands - I made quite a few field inspections this past week looking at reduced-stands of soybeans due to herbicide damage. The margin of selectivity between dependable weed control and crop damage of some her bicides is rather narrow. You can get an 'indication whether or not you can expect any yield reduction due to herbicide injury by counting your plant population. Tdn to twelve plants per foot of row at harvest in 40-inch rows, six to eight plants in 30-inch rows, four to six plants in 20-inch rows, or three to four plants in 10-inch rows will provide maximum yield for May and very early June plantings.
