HELPING PAWS Some worthwnne thought^ about dogs from "A New Dictionary of Quotations" selected and edited by .H.L,; Mencken. Histories are more full of examples of the fidelity of dogs than of friends. Alexander Pope: Letter to H. Cromwell, Oct. 9, 1709 'Tis sweet to hear the watch dog's honest bark Bay deep mouth'd welcome as we draw near home; 'Tis sweet to know there is an eye will mark Our coming, and look' brighter when we come. & Byron: Don Juan, 1 One of the animals which a generous and sociable man w$uld sooner become is a dog. A dog can have a friend; he has affections and character; he' can enjoy equally the field and the fireside; he dreams, he caresses, he propitiates; he offends, and is pardoned; he, stands by you-in adversity; he is a good fellow. Leigh Hunt: The Indicator, LXIV, 1812 The dog alone, of all brute animals, has an affection ^up wards to man. S.T. Coleridge: Table-Talk, May 2, 1830 ' ' I agree with Agassiz that dogs possess something very like a conscience. Charles Darwin: The Descent of Man, IV. 1871 The great pleasure of a dog is that you may make a fool of yourself with.him and not only will he not scold you, but he will make a fool of himself too. Samuel Butler: Note-Books, c. 1890 Our German forefathers had a very kTnd religion. They believed that after death, they would meet again all the good flogs J hat had been tneir companions in life. I wish I could believe that too. Otto Von Bismarck (1815-1898) Next week we'll give equal time to the cat. And now if these fine com ments haven't convinced you of the worth of the dog, you'll learn this when you own one. Helping Paws has many fine pets for adoption.
