At the same time one has to real ize that in those days, nails were particularly scarce and costly because until a nail cutting and heading machine was invented in the mid 18th century, all pro duction was handmade by the local blacksmith. The various sizes were valued and identified in terms of "pennies" and interestingly enough, these same terms still exist today. . .at the neighbor hood hardware store or lumber yard, the size of the nail we want ip. deno ted by "tenpenny", "twen- typenny" etc „ a practical reminder of ouir earliest history when nails played a dual role in a struggling new land. As nails were far from plentiful in the col onies , more houses than not were built with wooden pegs but nevertheless there were many cases where nails had been used in construction and it was not unusual for an abandoned house or building to be burned down just to salvage any nails it might contain. . . . The practice was ex tensive enough that in Vir ginia, the Colonial author ities (1646) established a policy whereby the owner of a vacated building would be paid a compensating sum based on the value of the nails in the structure, if he would refrain from using the torch. It can also be used for repairing chips incurred in installation of a new tub,*-or to change the fixture's color. It can be done -on location, without removal. Its process merges compounds to the original bathtub enamel, thus developing a permanent molecular bond, reportedly more acid and chemical resistant than the original finish. Its manufacturers say that the "lectroglazing" process wiU cut down on staining effects of water-dissolved minerals, one of the maior causes of bathtub deterioration.
