PAGE 20-SUPPLEMENT TO PLAINpEALER-WEDNESDAY, JULY 9, 1975 Multi-purpose RVs offer all outdoor treat Once considered man's world, now mom and kids too can enjoy nature's wonders Not too long ago, the Great Outdoors was strictly a man's World. That first breath of icy cold air in the morning, the smell of fresh fish frying over a camp- fire, the patter of rain against a tent, watching deer venture timidly out of the woods -- these were exper iences shared by only a few. The sheer physical difficulties inherent in reaching remote wilderness areas, as well as the skill and ex perience required for camping in the wild, denied the thrill of vacationing in the outdoors to most families. Expanding enjoyment of heritage But in recent years, that situation changed. Thanks to the accessibility afforded by a special type of trans portation system -- recreation vehicles, or "RVs" -- many more Americans have enjoyed their heritage of forests, lakes, mountains, streams, and deserts. RVs are not merely automobiles; rather, they are professionally engineered vehicles that combine living quarters with transporta tion. But in order to justify ownership among most families in today's econ omy, recreation vehicles must provide practicality as well as mobility. Inter national Harvester, for example, calls their line of RVs "multi-purpose" vehicles, and with good reason. The more func tions a vehicle can per form, the greater its value. $ _ Annual Sidewalk SALE! Multiple purpose The International Scout is a good example of this multi-purpose aspect. It is first of all a compact -- only a 100-inch wheelbase and no excess sheet metal; however, it can carry up to 82 cubic feet of cargo and be equipped to tow trailers up to 5,000 pounds. Its chassis is that of a small truck, but inside there is a choice of several luxurious vinyl interior combinations, bucket seats, carpeting, autofnatic transmission, power steer ing, power brakes, and an AM/FM radio. Of course, the Scout's primary asset is four- wheel drive. With its short turning radius and gener ous ground clearance, the Scout can reach almost any remote recreation area. It can function liter ally as a sports car, station wagon, truck or mountain goat depending on the re quirements of the moment. Station wagon The International Trav- elall is a station wagon built specifically to tow trailers; in fact, it can be ordered with a special trailer-towing package. But the Travelall is more than ax towing vehicle. Although it measures 18 inches shorter than a con ventional station wagon, it has 20 per cent more cargo space -- 124 cubic feet. And it can be equip ped with four-wheel drive. Vehicle versatility International pickup trucks pro^jde the same type of versatility as the Scout and Travelall. The "Camper Special" package includes heavy-duty cool ing and electrical com ponents, sway bars, aux iliary ftj£l tanks, heavy- duty battery and alter nator, dual exhaust, and low profile mirrors. A pick up truck can be used to mount either a slide-in camper body, pull a fifth- wheel trailer (with a spe cial mount), or carry a simple camper cap on the pickup box. International recreation vehicles are providing practical transportation to the Great Outdoors. International Scout 4x4 of fers opportunity for adven ture. , Four by fours offer scouting adventures Some recreational vehi cles don't provide any of the so-called comforts of home, but what they do offer is opportunity. Opportunity, that is, to escape crowded campsites and to reach the rugged back country of the Great Outdoors thanks to the extra dimension of mobil ity afforded by a four- wheel drive vehicle such as the International Scout. At home everywhere But owning a four-wheel drive vehicle (purists don't call them cars) does not mean playing nursemaid to a cross between a rhi noceros and a Sherman tank with the looks and ride to match. The Scout, for example, is just as at home in a suburban su permarket parking lot as it is traversing a moun tain creek bed. With automatic trans mission, power brakes, power steering, stereo tape deck, air conditioning, comfortable bucket seats, the' Scout offers identical creature comforts as any Detroit sedan or wagon. On the outside there are a number of two-tone color combinations along with special vinyl wood grain or white side panel appliques and some dis tinctive striping packages as well. Silent drive Performance features include a "silent drive" transfer case that lets the Scout switch into four- wheel drive by simply pull ing a dash-mounted knob. Four wheeling in the Great Outdoors is a sport ,, for the entire family, yet the Scout can provide that opportunity while provid ing at the same time a vehicle that serves this family equally well at home.
