\ l'A(»K 13 - PLAINDKALEK-FRIPAY, JULY 11, 1975 Psychologists say that men with hobbies are Relaxed If you believe "it isn't the gift, it's the thought that counts," a gift to dad of a hobby is a natural one. Dr. Rudolph Brandt, a Beverly Hills, California industrial psychologist^ echoes the recommenda tion of most psychologists, psychiatrists and physi cians that most every man would benefit by having a constructive hobby. A do-it-yourself hobby, says Dr. Brandt, helps al leviate the "tensions and boredom of daily routine and creates a more relax ing home atmosphere. It is also an activity, he points out, which invari ably interests the rest of his family and stimulates conversation other than just hashing over prob lems. If he's retired or a grandfather, Dr. Joyce Brothers, noted author and psychologist, believes that a hobby is a wonder ful way to give him a new interest; something he'll delight in doing and talk ing about. The hobbies they recom mend do not entail the physical heart strains of golf, tennis, or bowling, which all too often are taken so seriously that they merely extend the competition of the busi ness world to the golf * course, tennis court or bowling alley. They are de- mjttk ESCORTED BUS TOURS CONSERVE GASOLINE AND ENERGY. GO THE CAREFREE WAY WITH A ESCORTED ONE DAY OR OTHER TOURS UP TO 20 DAYS. SEE THE U.S.A. FIRST. According to the Hobby Industry of America there are hundreds of hobbies with built-in adult ap peal, for those who already have a hobby or for those who need one. If he's chained to an of fice or production line, break- a link by getting him out in the sun or wind with a flying model plane or a sailing ship. He'll re capture his youth. He'll be rewarded with mental and physical exercise he'll en joy by piloting his model plane or sailing his model ship. And don't forget model electric railroads. These are miles from the toy trains of the past. They are precision engineered and exquisitely detailed. For the man who is ar tistic there is a wide vari ety of art and craft kits to make him feel like a Michelangelo or a Picasso. Or start him off as a stamp collector. And this isn't just kid stuff. There are active hob by clubs in practically ev ery city that would wel come him. They range from local stamp clubs, to the Academy of Model Aeronautics which has over 80,000 members. The American Model Yachting Association has over 40,000 model enthu siasts. The Model Railroad Association has thousands of members with affiliated clubs most everywhere. The International Plastic Modelers Society; the Na tional Miniature Military Model Collector's Society; the American Car Model Association are just a few of the organizations with which he can share his in terest. Happily for the giver, too, in these days of price consciousness browsing through any hobby store will show that there are chobby gifts priced to olease the most thrifty. &y Tune in on foreign broadcasts at camp A SMILE MAKER . . . Most any man will enjoy the gift of a hobby/sport of flying his own model plane whether he builds it himself or receives one ready to fly. If the sea at tracts him, rather than the sky, there are equally fascinating scale model kits or sailing or motorized yachts; some easy enough to assemble by the man who thinks he's all thumbs. For the indoor sportsman, the Hobby Industry of America suggests helping him relax with a model electric railroad or scale model kits of cars, planes, or ships to help him for get his day-to-day problems and restore his sense of humor. They are priced to fit any budget wherever hobbies are sold. WITH >>vS ̂ CREPES FILLED WITH A VARIETY OF INTERNATIONAL SPECIALITIES. Listening to broadcasts from overseas countries can be an exciting way to "tune in" on what's hap pening in different areas of the world, and may add an extra dimension to an outdoor vacation. Zenith Radio Corpora tion, manufacturers of the world-famous Trans oceanic portable radio, ^as some tips and sugges tions for getting the most from an international short-wave receiver. • Tune very slowly,, be cause a weak signal be tween two powerful local or North American sta tions may be overlooked. • Don't be discouraged by receiving foreign lan guage broadcasts if you cannot understand them-- many stations around the world do broadcast in Eng lish, also. • Visually check the tun ing meter as an aid in "picking out" a station's signal. With a modern interna tional short-wave receiver such as Zenith's Trans- Oceanic, you may be able to listen to a live play-by play description of an in ternational sports event from the country of origin; the famous world-wide news network of the Brit ish Broadcasting Corpora tion; or the overseas Voice of America; broadcasts from the continents of Africa, Australia, South America or the Asian sub continents. Reception will vary by geographic loca tion, atmospheric condi tions, and other phenom ena affecting reception."" The Zenith Trans-Oce anic portable radio also tunes amateur broadcasts on SW bands, marine re ports, navigation and weather advisories, and AM and FM programming, plus foreign countries on the international short wave frequencies. Valuable flying information is available outside the air craft with this 5-band port able radio by Zenith. In ad dition to the aircraft band, four other bands tune AM, FM, Marine band and Pub lic Service High Band. British Rock Performance (Review of Pink Floyd) v/i i Sunday, June zz, me Milwaukee County Stadium hosted one of the finest productions in rock music. The entertainers were the British rock group. Pink Floyd, con sisting of David Gilmour. Roger Waters, Richard Wright and Nick Mason. Pink Floyd is the exception rather than the rule when it comes to progressive music. Their imagination draws from the extraordinary, the grotesque, the unknown and the future. Not being limited to the realm of magical mysticism. Pink Floyd catered to their most recent fans by playing Dark Side of the Moon. At times, it seemed like too much recent Pink Floyd fanaticism, too lUtle Um- magumma and Echoes. The audience had smoked through upwards of three hours of fain- soaked delays, though the group did its best to cheer them with their faithful "Dark Side" hits. The audience appeared stunned throughout Pink Floyd's masterful approach toward special effects. Onlookers were to either to be surrounded by ethereal shrouds of fog or -"captivated - by numerous stage explosions and fireworks. In fact, people surrounding the stage on the field were to spend much of the night in a Pink Floyd obscured cloud. Accompanied by an arrangement of movies along with Dark Side of the Moon, Pink Floyd again proved to be imaginative in other fields. Along with Pink Floyd's menagerie of special effects, the people were also a unique vice of entertainment.
