Talented „Singing Star In "Bloody Mary" Role SHIRLEY SMITH Many friends and fans of Shirley Smith of McHenry traveled to Wisconsin last week to see the talented McHenry singing star in Milwaukee Music Under the Stars production of "South Pacific". Mi s. Smith played the part of Bloody Mary before audiences of 38,000 for the two nights of performance. Sharing leading roles were Moi 'ey Meridith of the New York Met. Barbara Meister, David Binder and Billy Starr of Broadway fame. The local singer received the biggest ovations for her songs, and many found it difficult to believe this was her first professional show. The beautiful settings and cast of fifty performers delighted an enthusiastic audience. Critic Jay Joslyn of the Milwaukee Sentinel said, "The most consistent blend of music and acting was developed by Shirley Smith as the irrespressible 'Bloody Mary'" The play was directed by Robert Simpson, one of the top musical comedy director in the country. Music by Milwaukee's sixty-piece symphony or chestra was conducted by the renowned John Anello. The performance was held in Milwaukee's Washington Park Temple of Music. MM V your week ahead BY DR. My mother is dead and my father takes care of us. The problem is I'm not allowed to have a boyfriend or take company. I'm not even allowed to go to dances and have fun with the few friends that 1 have. It's just like a prison. All 1 do is go to school, come home, go to town, go to church--and that's all My father says I have to get my education first and then I can do what I want By that time it might be too late. OUR REPLY: The first thing you have to do is accept the fact that you are a teenager. Your father makes the rules in his house Onc^ you learn to obey those rules he will most likely recognize your efforts Then you will be given more responsibility. We've all had to pass through the period you're now'experiencing It's doubtful that your situation even slightly resembles a prison so don't take yourself so seriously Share and com municate your feelings openly with your father You both love each other and can work things out Becouse of the volume of letters to this column, requests for personal replies can not be accommodated.
