New Equipment For Hospital A grant of almost $11,000 has made it possible for Memorial Hospital for McHenry County to acquire an important ad dition to its obstetrical department. A grant from the National • Foundation of the March of Dimes has been used to pur chase a fetal monitoring unit and to train personnel at Memorial hospital to operate it, Bert Hanson, executive director, announced. Hanson expressed deep appreciation to the county members of the March of Dimes and to the National Foundation medical service program officials who arranged for the installation of this first such equipment in McHenry county. The $10,873 was raised in McHenry county, much of it through two walk-a-thons conducted by teen-agers, said Mrs. Angela Burden, one of the committee membeft whose work generated the enthusiasm that led to the successful effort. Dr. William Larsen, ob stetrician on the hospital staff, said the fetal monitoring unit is an advanced method of following a mother-to-be during labor. Its use helps assure the physician and his staff that mother and infant are satisfactory. "It also is useful in spotting problems should they develop or if there is something during pregnancy that a doctor wishes to follow," said Dr. Larsen. The equipment consists of a central monitoring station and a portable unit. They are connected by a cable, and the central station includes an alarm system to alert staff members to any significant changes. Its use will be of special help in pregnancies when there is any unusual risk. Dr. Larsen continued. The Corometrics company equipment was purchased following a discussion with the high risk center at Rockford Memorial' hospital and an analysis of Memorial hospital and an analysis of Memorial hospital's needs.
