With prices what they are for food, how does one feed the family and still afford to keep pet or ^ two while providing these pets with a healthy and nutritious diet? This subject is the main content of her book containing recipes and nutrition advice based on her training in science and her experience in cooking for two dogs and four cats, all serving as testers and satisfied diners. It starts with cooking for your pets, something which many of us have never tried, but mav be STEAKHOUSE & LOUNCE INTERSECTION HWY. 120 & GREEN ST. Cheap parts of chicken (the necks, hind quarters, and gizzards), fish heads, kidneys, odds and ends of liver-the butcher can't sell as people food, bones of all kinds, go to make nourishing stocks, and solid foods for hungry pets. Combined with grains and cereals, dry food can be baked using recipes she gives. The ideal proportions of food elements --'protein, fat, and carbohydrates - for dogs and cats are shown in easy to un derstand tables helpful to the pet owner who knows little about this. With a mother who always cooked for our pets it is easy to recall many similarities in their procedures - the use of cod liver oil. garlic and cooking with greens, among them. Joan recommends food supplements that are sensible too. One of Joan Harper's con cerns is that people will get rid of their pets if feeding costs are too high. So she explains how it is possible to own pets and feed them satisfactorily on a lo<v budget even if you are scraping the bottom of the barrel. "The Healthy Cat and Dog Cook Book" may be obtained at some local bookstores and in large department stores, for a small price, from the author at Box 413, Rt. 3, Richland Center, Wis., 53581. If you are considering adopting a pet, you won't have to let food bill worries deprive you of this pleasure. The pet you select from Helping Paws will reflect the beneficial diet you give it in health as well as beauty.
