The members of the McHenry band are Bernard Popp, Miss Anna Popp, Anton Freund, Earl Conway, J.E. Hauswirth, Henry J. Schaefer, Joe J. Miller, Director W.N. Sears, Alfred Oeffling, John E. Freund, John W. Schaefer, Ralph Justen, Michael ^Schaefer, Robert Kirwan, Elmer Koerner, Henry N. Schaefer, Nick Nett and Edwin Kirwin. A meeting will be held at the West McHenry state bank Friday evening to decide upon the founding of a McHenry 7 Kiwanis society. All business men interested are invited to attend. The newest in fall millinery is arriving every day at the Blake * Sisters, West McHenry. About three hundred couples attended the benefit dance for the McHenry firemen at Stoffel 's hall , West McHenry, Tuesday evening. The crowd just went wild over the snappy music furnished by the Pair O'Dice Night Owls, the peppy six piece Chicago orchestra. In addition to the orchestra there was an entertainer whose singing and dancing delighted the audience. There were many Chicago people at the hall . They came from resorts along (he river and bay. Among these were the "Four Horsemen", Harry Conley, H. Cronin, Franl Karthieser and H. Getchey but they left their horses outside. The finals for the A.H. Pouse CUD will be played off next Sunday. The players will be John Bussley and A.E. Nye. FORTY YEARSAGO (Taken from the files of Aug. 29, 1935) Sixty-three years ago on Aug. 10, 1872, McHenry was in corporated as a village at the first village election. The men elected were for President Richard Bishop, Trustees, J.B. Perry, J.M. McOmber, H.C. Smith, John King and F.K. Granger, Clerk Michael Keller and Treasurer Henry Colby. Caution signs are being put up near the school buildings in McHenry and will serve as warnings to motorists to drive carefully. This precautionary measure is the work of the Chicago Motor club and the signs were delivered by the branch manager of the Qhicago Motor club, V.L. Exler of Woodstock. Mr. and Mrs. Roland Mc- Cannon of Ringwood are moving to Algonquin where Mr. McCannon will teach school this fall . Jean Whiting of the Ringwood Sunshine Canning 4- H club, represented the McHenry County clubs last week in the foods judging contest at the state fair at Springfield. She won this honor at the county contest held in Woodstock. She judged canned Iruits, vegetables, jams and jellies. Happy Jack Turner of radio fame with his wife of Chicago spent the weekend at the Pink Harrison resort at Pistakee Bay. Happy Jack sings over the radio station WMAQ every day at noon. Ben Bauer, commander of McHenry Post of the American Legion the past year, and Tom Bolger, past commander, have been appointed members of the advisory committee of the county council , the committee being headed by Frank Brockrogge of Crystal Lake. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Sept. 7, 1950) Virgil Prine, industrial arts instructor at the McHenry community high school was awarded his master 's degree in industrial education at Iowa State college at Ames, Iowa, following eleven weeks of in tensive study. Two McHenry youths, John F. Ziolkowski, seaman recruit , U.S.N, and John F. Burns, seaman recruit , are un dergoing recruit training at the world's largest Naval Training center. Great Lakes, 111. A wedding of great beauty was solemnized at St. Mary's church, Sept. 2 when Miss Anita Freund became the bride of Mr. Edwin Stoffel both of McHenry. In a recent current National Magazine there was a story on the McHenry Mills Inc. The McHenry Mills Inc. was originally a water powered mill using buhrs exclusively for grinding local grain into flour and meal. In 1906 when the mill was sold to a new owner, a steam engine was installed that ran the mill for eighteen years. In 1924 the steam engine gave way to a 150 hp Diesel. The mill was again changed in 1946 when individual electric motors were installed for operating most mill equipment with the ex ception of the millstones which are stil l turned by the diesel. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Sept. 2, 1965) A McHenry resident of a year, Florence J. Wallace, lost her life in a one car accident which took place Aug. 29 on Bay road near Pistakee Bay "Y". Mrs. Wallace was on her way to work as a waitress at the Sale Inn, Fox Lake, when her auto apparently went out of control and crashed. She was the mother of four young children. Shortly before,, noon on Tuesday a neon sign on Rudy's Drive-In in Lakeland Park shorted causing a small amount of damage to the roof. Among the 1,350 who registered for classes at McHenry high school this week was 18 year old Do Thi Kim Nagan, who will be known to classmates as Mercury. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Newkirk announce the birth of a daughter Aug. 24 at the McHenry Jjospital. Duane Harris of McHenry is the new driver champion of the modified stock cars at the Kenosha County Speedway in Wilmot, Wis. Harris clin ched the ti t le on Saturday Night. Harold Wohnrade of Wonder Lake was guest of honor at a party given for him last Thursday evening. Recreational swims for second through eighth grade youth are from 5 to 6 p.m. on week days during the school year and on afternoons during the summer; for high school youth on Monday through Friday Irom 8 to 8:45 p.m. and Saturday at 10 and 12:30; and for adults any time during the hours the building is open.
