Keepin Healthy by Mary Richards II you're planning to celebrate the end of summer w ith a Labor day visit to one of Illinois' many beaches, the Illinois Department of Public Health has some tips you should keep in mind when choosing a beach for your outing. First, before you decide to go in swimming, look at the conditions at the beach If you see trash, garbage or other debris strewn about the ground, you probably should find a different beach Waste and garbage can attract bugs to the area, and can also get into the water. It 's also wise to swim only at a beach where a lifeguard is on duty at all times. Next, look for shower facilities.. and be sure to shower both before and after you swim. Shower facilities should be clean and neat with no standing water on the floors in the shower area and no garbage or other debris. Use plenty of soap * when you shower, as this will help prevent the spread of any disease organisms you may have picked up either before or during your swim. The beach where you decide to swim should be sandy, not muddv. The water should be clear, and free of floating materials. If the water contains snails, there's a chance you might go home with a case of Swimmers' Itch...not a very pleasant reminder of your end- of-summer outing. Another tip is to avoid swimming in stagnant, or still water There should be movement in the water (as with a spring or pond), as this helps keep the water clear. Welfare Agency Seeking Aid In "Desperate" Case A child welfare agency is in desperate need of a one or two- bedroom apartment for a 17- > ear-old expectant mother. The \oung woman at present is living in a foster home and- has one relative who is in poor health and can give only limited assistance. No security deposit van be paid at thisjime. but after arrival of the baby, she will be eligible for Aid to Dependent Children funds. The agency spokesman said the young girl has experienced tar more problems in seventeen \ears than most people do in a iiletime Her only possession is a dog and the agency hopes to find living quarters where she can keep her pet The highest rent she will be able to pay based on the A D C. payment, is $150. or $165 with utilities included Anyone who can offer assistance is asked to, call 312- 546-2152 and ask for Ann. The area around the beach should be grassy and wooded. A grassy, wooded area holds heavy rain and wasfe water and helps keep it from running into the swimming water If the beach you decide to use has eating areas, they should be well away from the beach area. This prevents waste and garbage from entering the water. Finally, when you do go in swimming, don't forget the common sense precaution ...don't swim after a heavy rain (there is too much run-off and thus a higher bacteria count from the surrounding area)...be sure you understand the buoys that indicate water depth, and don't swim out beyond the "safe"' areas...wear a cap to help prevent ear in fections take precautions against sunburn All these tips for safe swimming at the beach are not intended to take the fun out of your holiday. The Illinois Department of Public Health wants you to enjoy yourself in Illinois...and by knowing what to look for. you can have a healthier, safer holiday. If you want r^ore information about beaches or about swimming pools, contact: Jerry Ackerman, chief of the Division of Swimming Pools and Recreation, Illinois Department of Public Health, 535 West Jefferson, Springfield, Illinois 62761.
