' l i Sweet Adelines Plan "Barbershop Bigtop 11 "Barbershop Bigtop" is the name of the show to be presented Oct. 11 and 12 by the McHenry chapter of Sweet Adelines. The show will be presented at 8 p.m. Saturday and at 4 p.m. Sunday. A li t t le circus and a lit t le nostalgia in the form of old favorites, will l>e presented barbershop style at the Central school in Crystal Lake on both dates. A1 Smith of McHenrv has helped the McHenry chorus write the script for the second annual show and will aid in i ts production Smith studied drama for four years at Saton Hall university in New Jersey. He was a member of Actors Equity in New York, Theater First in Chicago and has acted and directed with small theater groups throughout the midwest lor two years. A group of county volunteers have worked since last fall organizing the series and planning the sub scription sales. Members of the Community Concerts executive board are David Scherer, president; John Landon, first vice-president; Marilyn Scherer, second vice- president; John Landon, first vice-president; Marilyn Scherer, second vice-president (membership); Marie Ann Vos, third vice-president (publicity); Diane Koenig, secretary and Hazel Dunn, treasurer. The Community Concert plan, which operates in 800 cities in the United States and Canada, brings major concert artists and performing groups to the community at modest prices. No tickets are sold for individual performances. Admission is by membership card which can be obtained from Community Concert volunteer workers. The concerts in Crystal Lake will be held at 8 p.m. in the auditorium of Crystal Lake Community high school, 45 W. Franklin street. Three concerts are guaranteed this year. A fourth concert is planned if the subscription drive is suc cessful. The opening concert on Nov. 5 will present the world famous Texas Boys choir, called by Igor Stravinsky "the best boys choir in the world", in a program which includes special tpusic appropriate for the Bicentennial celebration. Subcription sales for the 1975- 76 concert series are due to begin on Sept. 15. Marilyn Scherer, membership chair person announces that division heads for the campaign have been appointed. They include Hugh Locker, McHenry, and Irene Borre, Spring Grove- Hebron. After Sept. 28, the Com munity Concerts campaign headquarters will be open at 31 East Crystal Lake avenue in Crystal Lake. Honor Five With Prominent Roles yln FS History Five men who had prominent roles in the building and development of McHenry FS will be honored in the new McHenry FS office building with the display of their por traits. They will be unveiled at the open house Sunday, Sept. 4 The Gallery of FS Builders was established to recognize the-length of service and the contribution of people who have helped McHenry FS grow in stature to prov farm products and the services needed to assure efficient use of products available. said Stanley Steagall , general manager. The five protraits to be un veiled w&re taken in May. 1975, soon after the board of direc tors authorized the tribute. All five men have served on the board of directors over a period of years and have retired from the board. Portraits honor Arthur Hoppe of McHenry, now living in Florida, 1945-1961 board member; Stanley Church, Marengo, 1940-1967; Kenneth Cristy. Ringwood farmer who died in July. 1940-1969 board member; Earle B Johnson, Huntley. 1954-1974; and L. Russell Beard. Hebron, 1947- 1975. Church and Cristy were members of the Kishwaukee Service company, the company that served farmers in McHenry, DeKalb and Boone counties, when the decision was made to form McHenry County Service company, predecessor company to McHenry FS. McHenry County Service company began service Feb. 1. 1945. The name was changed to McHenry FS effective May 31, 1965, with the merger of McHenry County Service company and McHenry County Farmers Co-operative association. Sales foundation at that t ime was $2 , i> million. Today sales exceed $8 million. In taking these portraits Don Peasley continued an association with these farmers which began when he moved to McHenry county as a journalist in 1947. Through the years he became closely acquainted with these farm leaders through his work with Farm Bureau and McHenry FS. Four of the photographs were taken on farms. Peasley took Art Hoope's photo in the front yard of Art 's home in northern Florida where the former McHenry area farmer retired Hoppe enjoys life in the sunshine and on a lake at Summerfield. Fla. Mr. and Mrs. Hoppe are ad jacent to an orange grove. They have a banana tree in the front yard, a lake leading from a spacious back yard-and they welcome visitors from the north with rustic hospitality Open House Sept. 14 At New FS Building An open house to enable farmers and the public to see the new office building of McHenry FS at Woodstock is planned for Sunday afternoon, Sept. 4. The building, which has several maintenance-saving features, will be open from 1 to 4 p.m., Stanley Steagall , general manager, said as he invited farmers of McHenry and Walworth counties and the general public to tour the building. As an added feature, McHenry FS personnel will display various pieces o f rolling equipment used in providing modern-day services for fer til izer and feed handling. The new McHenry FS office building at McConnell road and Route 47, adjacent to the Farm Bureau building, Woodstock, is the result of planning began in 1962. Steagall explained that the McHenry FS board realized McHenry county Farm Bureau's growth in mem bership and services would require more space for Farm Bureau offices in about a decade. The Farm Bureau building was built in 1962. McHenry FS began construction of i ts new office headquarters Sept. 20, 1974, and personnel began moving into the building on March 3, 1975.
