Kitty O'Neil, the chairman, is responsible tor developing and maintaining Girl Scouting in the neighborhood and is the link with the rest of the council. She interprets policies, organizes committees and training sessions, initiates the fund drive and chairs the monthly leaders' meetings. Connie Catanzaro, neigh­ borhood secretary, takes the minutes at all meetings, handles correspondence, keeps records and assists the chairman in her many duties. The troop organizers, Marya Weber and Dorie Tonyan, see that troops are properly organized, find leaders, assign ^irls to troops and do all the necessary paper work needed to register girls in scouting. There are consultants for every level of scouting. Cathy Nolan and Kathy Schaefer take care of Brownies, Dee Price is the consultant for Juniors and Betty Smith for Cadettes. These women give individual troop leaders training and guidance and help plan special events. There are many other jobs in scouting also. Those who feel they have time to help the McHenry service team bring scouting to more girls, should contact Kitty O'Neil and volunteer services a few hours a month. * • * * It isn't necessary to prime an alert mind with alcohol. FIFTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Sept. 17, 1925) Mrs. Christina Schreiner, for more than half a century a highly esteemed citizen of this city, passed away at her late home on Park avenue, Sept. 10, at the age of 74. One of the prettiest weddings of the year was celebrated at St. Mary's church, Sept. 12, when Miss Lillian Freund of McHenry became the bride of Mr. Louis Stoffel also of this city. Rev. Fr. Freund per­ formed the ceremony. Louise, 9 year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs.^ohn Regner, who underwent a very serious operation at the Garfield Park hospital two weeks ago, will be able to return home in a few days if no complications arise. The grand prize of the Pistakee fair which was to be awarded Sept. 5 was given away Sunday, Sept. 13, Stanley Onin of Chicago was the lucky winner of the beautiful Nash Sedan. A delegation of about forty McHenry men and women met on the fourth floor of the Edgewater Beach hotel in Chicago to obtain the charter for the organization of a Kiwanis club for this city. An American flag was given to McHerny delegates by the neighboring Kiwanians of Libertyville. The acceptance speech was made by Vice- President, C.W. Stenger, J.C. Thies was elected district trustee. The seven directors chosen were, C.J. Reihan- sperger. F.E. Covalt, N.H. Petesch, William Spencer, R.J. Overton, George H. Johnson and Roy Kent. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Sept. 19, 1935) The contract for the con­ struction of a sewage treatment plant, pipe lines and other appurtenances for the city of McHenry has been awarded to the Guyesosald Construction company of Iowa, for the amount of $21,137. The com­ pany will move its machinery to McHenry next Monday. f A group of McHenry men left Wednesday afternoon to join Chicago friends on an 800 miles cruise on the Marelto II. They will cruise down the Illinois river into the Mississippi on a ten day trip. Those making the trip were Thomas Brennan, Carl Bickler, August Freund, Arnold Rauen, Melvin Walsh, Harry Wallis Warner of the Standard Oil company, A1 Rumley of the Rumley Foundaries of LaPorte, Ind., and F.E. O'Reilly, Western Union manager. Fifty years ago the McHenry public school opened with J.J. Vasey as principal, Miss Clara Wightman in the intermediate department. Miss Nettie Page as teacher of the primary department and W E. Wheeler, teacher of the West McHenry division. Just fifty years from that date there opened in McHenry not only its wonderful community high school which compares favorably with any high school in the county, but also for the first time a junior college affiliated with the University of Illinois and the first one of its kind opened in McHenry county. Miss Roepple who was announced last week as a college teacher, will be replaced by Mr. Dykstra. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Sept. 28, 1950) Robert Thompson and Paul Patzke, prominent flower growers in this area, were among the award winners at the eighth annual flower show in Elgin recently. Art Henschel, owner of Art and Lee's restaurant on Riverside drive, was elected vice-president of the Retail Liquor Dealers Protective association of Illinois at the state convention held recently at 'the Sherman hotel in Chicago. Otto Mueller, an employee of the Schroeder Iron Works, was working in a home near Griswold Lake when the pressure gauge on an oxygen tank which he was using in his work exploded and caused a fire. He sustained burns on the body, face and neck and was more severely burned on both arms. A report has been forwarded to Chicago headquarters by the Red Cross preparedness and relief committee of which Roy Kent of McHenry is chairman stating that a survey reveals that 17,000 persons could be sheltered in fifty-nine buildings in ihis county in the event of bombing or evacuation in the larger cities. Meadow Hill lane, McHenry, has departed Nor­ folk, Va., aboard the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz, enroute to Northern European waters as part of a U.S. Atlantic Fleet nuclear-powered task group.
