Marengo Nips Marian; Central In Thriller 7-0 Susan Hoffman Named N.I.U. Varsity Cheerleader By DickRabbitt Coach Rod Poppe Marengo Indians won a thriller over Marian Friday night at Marengo by the score of 7 to 0. The only score of the game came in the final period when John Koester scooted 4 yds. into the end zone. Scott Dunker's kick was good to make the score 7 to 0. I t was an evenly matched game between two well coached teams, and in the total stats Marengo outgained the Hurricanes by a mere 24 yards for the evening. Two penalties were costly to the Hurricane eleven. In the opening period Mark Saladin intercepted a Indian pass and scampered 80 yds to a T.D. However, a clipping penalty nullified the nice run by the senior speed ster. Later in the game another long run to the Indian 10, was called back . again because of clipping. Marengo's score came midway in the final period on a 55 yd drive, highlighted by John Koester s 35 yd. run around end. He finally went into paydirt from the 4 yd. l ine with about 6 minutes remaining. Jeff Connerty was the workhorse of the Marian of fense lugging the ball 17 t imes for 104 yds. This is Jeff 's second gam^in a row that he managed to gain over 100 yds. Anytime a high school player can gain 100 yds. from scrimmage, you know he is doing a nice job. Marian- 'a next game will be on Saturday when they host the always powerful Cadets from Marmion. Game time is 2:00 P.M. with the soph's starting at 12:00. STATS RUSHING Connerty • 17 for 104 yds. LeBlanc 6 for 14 yds. Bill Rankin 3 for 6 yds. Mike Rankin 4 for 21yds. Knox 4 for 9yds. PASSING Knox 1 for 12 - 30yds. RECEIVING Mike Rankin 1 for 30 yds. Coach Parker commented after the game that he was quite pleased with his squad. The defense played excellent except when they had a break down in signals in the 4th period. He felt also that the offense needed more con sistency and will be working on that phase this week. The coach wouldn't admit it , but I 'm sure he felt that the two penalties at the wrong time, added to his woes for the evening.
