Friends and neighbors welcomed Valerie to our community and presented her with many lovely gifts. Refreshments were served and included punch, coffee and special "Shower of Happiness" cake made by Rita Rice. BIRTHDAYS Happy birthday to Christopher Maksymiak, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wayne OBK Prepare For Candy Sale The McHenry Lions club will be one link in a chain of light and hope when 30,000 Lions and volunteers throughout the state combine forces to try to raise $1,000,002 to help the blind. The date is Oct. 10, and the project is the twenty-third annual Illinois Lions Candy Day for the Blind. There will be a Lion or friend on practically every street corner-and they will be highly visible. Each will wear a yellow hat and apron inscribed with the day's signature, and each will carry candy rolls to give away-- in exchange for donations. No candy rolls are sold; all are given away. And the first contribution that goes in the canister is always from the Lion holding it. This has been true for years - Illinois Lions have raised more than $9.5 million in past Candy day campaigns to help the blind More than 30,000 people will don hats and aprons and carry 3 million candy rolls when the Illinois Lions and friends take to the streets Oct. 10 for the twenty-third annual Candy Day for the Blind. The McHenry Lions club members getting ready for fund-raising are, left standing, Robert Steiner, right, Leo Krumme, and kneeling, Richard K. Mercure with District Governor George V. Filip standing center. and the visually handicapped. Organizations around the world have asked for fund-raising tips from Illinois Lions, and mar veled at their successes. The successes can be explained in four words; hard work and dedication. The visible part of Candy day is the fun part -- the smiling Lions, the comradeship, the colorful clothing. But it is the part that is invisible to the passerby that is important. This is the part that is the result of those quarters and dollar bills from around the state. These are the results; the places where the money is used to help the blind help them selves. A relative, friend - or a great grandchild yet to be born - may be helped by research programs at the University of Illinois Medical School's Department of Ophthalmology. Programs and projects at the Illinois College of Optometry also receive funds from Candy day. Candy day also benefits Handley School for the Blind in Winnetka, the only home-study school for the blind in the world. Funds also go to Dialogue and Intercom, recorded magazines and services for the sightless. Medical care, eye banks, pre school vision screening. Lions of Illinois Funds for Emergency, equipment for the blind, glaucoma clinics, the special outings such as circus trips for blind youngsters also are supported by Candy Day proceeds. In charge of coordinating the event is the Lions of Illinois Foundation, 1515 N. Harlem Ave., Oak Park, a tax-exempt body recognized by the Internal Revenue Service for deductible charitable contributions.
