(DON PEASLEY PHOTOGRAPHY BY KAAREN DODGE) Offer Free Screening For Lead Poisoning In an effort to detect lead poisoning in young children, the McHenry County Association for the Retarded plans a free screening program Oct. 8,9 and 10 at several locations in McHenry county, Tom Gollan, director of children's services, announced this week. This free health care service will be for children 1 to 5 years of age. Exact locations and times are being finalized, and the use of a mobile van will help ex pand the program to reach out to people in the smaller com munities. Plans call for testing stations in the larger cities, and Gollan is working with Knights of Columbus councils to establish locations. The Knights of Columbus helped purchase the van which is being provided with the cooperation of the Illinois Association for Retarded Citizens. Kaycees have also aided to the work being done in McHenry county through the Pioneer center program for the handicapped' with donations. Many people remember the Tootsie Rolls campaign of the past several winters when Knights of Columbus members sold the candy, said Gollan, as he explained how the Kaycees raises some of its funds to aid the developmentally disabled. "Toys, pencils, crib sides, window sills and newspapers are among things children come in contact with that may be sources of lead poisoning. "Lead can be picked up from dust inside and outside the home, soil or dirt from outside playing areas, or lead particles in the air from auto exhausts which may settle on surfaces accessible to children." The test is a simple blood test that requires only ten minutes. ffecf Cross Lorrin Woodman, chairman of the McHenry county chapter oi the American Red Cross, presided at the quarterly meeting held at the local office in Woodstock. Lead poisoning is a major cause of mental retardation in otherwise normally healthy youngsters. One purpose of this screening is to detect signs of lead poisoning and to begin remedial action should cases of lead poisoning be found. This includes treatment and determination of the source of the lead poisoning. "Frequently there are no symptoms of lead poisoning until an extremely toxic level is reached. Early symptoms that should alert parents include headaches, listlessness, irritability, loss of appetite and occasional vomiting," said Gollan. yiven by Red Cross.
