On The Sidelines by Dick Rabbitt A large crowd was on hand for the McHenry High homecoming game last Friday night against Mundelein. The alumni and friends were cheering for a Warrior victory, but it was to be denied by the Mustangs. The Warriors only threat was in the closing seconds and then time ran out on them. The coaching staff is working hard to get the offense on keel. The defensive unit hasn't been that bad, but they need help from the offense. Look for an improved team tomorrow at Crystal Lake. Dawn Welch really put on a halftime show the other night. This senior gal from West Campus had the crowd roaring from both sides of the field with her baton twirling exhibition. One can see why Dawn has won many National Honors with her baton. The J.V. football team knows how to put points on the scoreboard. They ran their record to 4 and 0 last Monday with a 42 to 6 win over Antioch. Scoring six touchdowns in one game, is uncommon at McHenry. The future is looking bright already for the Warrior football squad. S.I.H. was quite impressed with the addition to the press box. Wally Scott and his Building Trades Class made an addition on the roof. Tom Phillips Warrior film man, and C6ach Ken Ludwig on the phones, were bannished upstairs. S.I.H. had a front row seat for the first time in many a year . Coach Mike Shanahan's Water Polo team defeated DeKalb last week by the score of 9 to 8. With so many athletic activities going on, you never know who is playing or where. The North Suburban Conference golf tourney will be held at McHenry Country Club on Monday, October 6th. Tee off time is 10:00 A.M. Barrington and Crystal Lake are the pre-meet favorities. Don't count out Coach Chuck Cuda's McHenry High team. They have a fine team, and will have the advantage of the home course. Coach Bill Hutchinson's " Running Warriors" will be in Peoria tomorrow for the Annual Peoria Invitational. This is the biggest cross country meet in the state outside of the State Finals. Forty some odd school will participate. Last year's defending state champions York of Elmhurst ranked number one in the state again this year is the tourney favorite. It is truly a great meet, and the best wishes from all Warrior fans go along with Hutch and his squad. My good friend Joe Reza of Gumee shot a hole in one at Chapel Hill Golf Course last Sunday morning. The shot was on the 150 yd. par 3 Number 8 hole. Joe became so excited that he shot an 8 on the ninth hole. Jerry Smith and George Street were playing with Joe at the time. Wouoci. LM£ g FUTILIA *4 i USC.& ^ V1 \ /Vf w ? 1. More than 33 million 4-H alumni continue to live the 4-H motto: To Make the Best Better. Founding Fathers were Firemen Like many of the Founding Fathers, George Washington con sidered it a civic duty to serve as a volunteer fireman. Washington belonged to a fire company in Alexandria, Va., as a young man and was made an hon orary member before he left to as sume command of the Continental Army in 1775. On a later visit to Philadelphia, he bought a pumping engine and presented it to the fire department which had been founded in that city by Ben Franklin. Paul Revere, Sam Adams and John Hancock all served as volun teers in Boston, where America's first fire department was established in 1679. The Massachusetts city had suf fered a series of disastrous fires be fore the American Revolution, starting with a blaze in 1653 which left a third of the population home less. To cope with the danger, Bos ton was divided into separate fire districts, each under the command of a "fireward." Sam Adams and John Hancock were both appointed firewards in 1766 and served in that position until the outbreak of the Revolu- rules, tion. Hancock donated a new "water engine" to the city in 1772 and, in gratitude, the town stipulated that Hancock's property would be pro tected first in the event of a fire. Adams and Hancock were forced to flee the city when the British occupied it in 1775. Ironically, Hancock's wharf was among the property destroyed in a fire which started in a British barracks during the occupation. Despite the extraordinary dedi cation of volunteer and professional firemen since Hancock's time, the United States today leads all other industrialized nations in the death and destruction caused by fire. The principal reason, experts believe, is the careless attitude of people toward fire. During Fire Prevention Week each October, a nationwide effort is made to educate the public in fire safety. A key part of that effort is a classroom program called Junior Fire Marshal, organized in 1947 by The Hartford Insurance Group to teach children to identify fire haz ards and obey simple fire safety Over 1,600 delegates are expected to attend the 54th National 4-H Congress, Nov. 30 - Dec. 4 in Chicago. More than 7 million boys and girls 8-10 take part in 4-H projects and activities. Among the new programs offered 4-H members in 1975 is the national 4-H environmental i m p r o v e m e n t p r o g r a m sponsored by UOI> (Universal Oil Products), an international technology company.
