Put away your yard work for a few hours and come out to West campus to enjoy a good meet. By Dick Rabbitt The McHenry High Warriors will host the powerful Barrington Broncos tonight at McCracken Field. The sophomore game will get under way at 6 p.m. and the Varsity will kick off at 8 p.m. The Broncos completely demolished North Chicago last Saturday by the score of 70 to 7. Coach Bill Graham has 11 returning lettermen, but all of them were starters. Carl Shellenback, brother of last year's scoring star Frank, is the quarterback, and has already tossed for 9 touchdown passes, while scoring 6 himself, including two 99 yd kickoff returns. The big gun in the Bronco attack is junior halfback Bryan Amis who scored a record 8 touchdowns against North Chicago. In 5 games Amis has scored 15 T.D.'s. Ends Brett Carsello, and transfer Phil Weyer, along with Bob Moore, Steve Bottom, and Mark Senseney make up the interior line on defense for the Broncos. Place kicking star Leo George, son of Hall of Famer Bill George, also plays fullback and is also a pass catching threat. The Broncos are currently tied for second place with Libertyville in the North Suburban. Coach Bill Day's Warriors will have their hands full against the Broncos. The spirit is high this week following the win over the Tigers last Saturday. I witnessed a practice early in the week, and the pads were really popping. Brian Nuss has come out of a mild slump, last Saturday the speedy halfback raced for 127 yds in 15 carries, and Don Rode was on target when it counted. Again the defense played good ball and it will have to be at its best tonight against the Broncos. Last week the Warriors made me out a poor prophet, ahd I'm going to give them the same chance this weekend. I'll pick the Broncos. Warriors haven't beaten Barrington since 1963. Dundee over Mundelein, Libertyville over the Tigers, Zion to beat Lake Forest, and in a match of winless teams I'll pick Crown to beat North Chicago. My record to date is 19 right and 6 wrong. Next Tuesday McHenry travels to Chicago to play Loyola Academy one of the top teams in the state. Next home meet is Oct. 20 when they host DeKalb. Last Monday night the girl tankers hosted Waukegan H.S. East. The Warrior girls worked hard, but the large Waukegan team was just too much for them-the final score was McHenry 59, Waukegan 107. McHenry first places went to Colleen Tranberg, 200 Freestyle; Vicki Roth, 500 Freestyle; and the 400 Free Relay team of Roth, Tranberg, Miki Collins, and Sue Worzala with a time of 5:05.5. Collins, Tammie Johnson, Worzala, and Lori Blankenhorn took second places in the 50 Free, 100 Fly, 100 Backstroke, and 100 Breaststroke, respectively. The 200 Medley Relay team of Worzala, Blankenhorn, Angel Betancourt, and Collins also pulled a second. Even the thirds, fourths, and fifths are noteworthy, however. in a meet where a predominantly inexperienced team squares off against an experienced Varsity level opponent.
