Young, Ex tension Adviser, agriculture, McHenry County) SOYBEAN PLOTS HAR VESTED - Thanks to Dan Walters of Hebron, and Lee Myers of Hughes Hybrids, Woodstock, for harvesting and measuring yield at our variety plots on Dan's farm. Top yielder of the thirteen varieties was Woodworth at 45.21 bu. per acre adjusted to 13 percent moisture. Woodworth is a maturity group III soybean, which is usually planted in southern Illinois. Peterson 3105 yielded 43.99; Peterson 3100, 43.06; Corsoy, 41.40; Peterson 105P, 40.55; Wells, 39.98; FS Hi Soy 225, 39.59; Hodgson, 39:04; Wayne, 37.60; Hark, 36.68; Beeson, 32.47; and Peterson 85, 31.56. CONGRATULATIONS - to Vern Stade of McHenry. Vern entered the University of Illinois and Illinois Crop Im provement association soybean yield contest. He harvested five acres out of his field near Volo and it yielded 52.9 busels per acres. TAX SCHOOL - There are still openings for practitioners who want to participate in the 1975 Farm Income Tax school sponsored by the University of Illinois, Internal Revenue Service and the Illinois Department of Revenue. VISITORS IN COUNTY - Mr. and Mrs. Earl M. Hughes of Woodstock hosted Josef Ertl, Minister of Agriculture of the Federal Republic of Germany as he visited the mid-west last week. OCTOBER IS PORK MONTH and1 our local Pork Producers association is helping to celebrate the oc casion. Some of the members are offering form tours to their local grade school classes. It is important that our young people understand where and how the food they eat is produced. The Association also presented a plaque to the Old Court House Inn in Woodstock in recognition of that restaurant's pork promotion activities. For pork recipies, call our office and ask for the University of Illinois Publication "Pork for the Table", Circular 622, for which there is no charge, or Pork in Family Meals, USDA HG Bulletin No. 160, for which there is a small charge. OUTLOOK UPDATE Remember our monthly Grain and Livestock Outlook Update session will be Oct. 27 from f: 15 to 3 p.m. at our University of Illinois Cooperative Extension Service office, 11909 McConnell road, Woodstock. Using a special telephone hook-up, you are able to talk with the universities top marketing specialists in Urbana to get their views and opinions on what's happening and why. This monthly session is aimed mainly at Extension advisers throuehout Illinois to keeD us informed, but I invite you to join me and get answers directly from the specialists. COUNCIL PLANS MEETINGS - Your McHenry County Agriculture Extension council of the University of Illinois has tentatively planned sixty public meetings on agricultural subjects to be offered in McHenry county over the next twelve months. We announce these educational sessions through news releases to local papers and radio stations. We also mail meeting an nouncements directly to per sons who ask to be on one or more of our subject matter mailing list. If you want your name added to our mailing list, just let us know what agricultural subjects you are interested in. In addition to the agricultural education program, our office also coordinates the 4-H Youth program and Home Economics educational programs in McHenry county. Full information is available at any VA office. Q --1 have been receiving my pension check from the Veterans Administration monthly without fail until this month. How come? A - You neglected to notify VA that you moved to a new address. Q -- What is the "man-on- campus" program I keep hearing about? A - It is an all-out effort by the Veterans administration to place a man on college cam puses to insure prompt delivery council of the University of Illinois. The Extension Service is available to all McHenry county residents. of GI Bill educational assistance checks by ex pediting change of addresses, dependency status or training programs. Q -- When an educational check has the right claim number, but the name is misspelled, example: " Willie Hancock" is shown for "Lillie Hancock" and the claimant cannot get the check cashed, what action should be taken in order for a new check to be made and how long will it take to get a new check to be issued? A -- This check should be returned to the VA office calling attention to the error. Action will be taken to correct the name and have the check reissued. If special pay procedures are indicated, the claimant should receive a check within seven days. Q. -- My husband, a military retiree, died of service- connected causes in May 1963 and was buried in a private cemetery. I received the $250 VA burial allowance but did not know there was a $150 plot allowance available for veterans buried in a private cemetery Was this in effect in 1963? A. -- The $150 plot allowance became effective Sept. 1, 1973. The new law also increased the burial allowance up to $800 for veterans who die of service- connected causes. Q. - 1 have located a home I can buy under the GI Bill, but the asking price is higher than the VA appraised price. Can I pay more than the market value to get that house9 A. - Yes. it you pay the dif ference between the VA ap praisal and the price of the home from your own resources (no borrowing). VA cannot approve a loan that exceeds the reasonable value of the home. Q. - If a veteran wants to change to a school in another state, where should he file his request? A. - His request should be Iiled with the VA regional office that currently has his records. It's easy to voice an opinion before one knows much about the subject involved.
