I FIFTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Nov. 19,1925) Before one of the largest crowds that has ever witnessed a football game on the M.C.H.S. gridiron the McHenry boys played unbeatable football against Barrington winning with a score of 18 to 0. Rev. M.J. McEvoy, pastor of St. Patrick's parish here, who sailed on the Conte Verde from New York, Sept. 6, for a visit to Rome, returned from that city on the Leviathan, Nov. 11,*. arriving in McHenry Saturday evening, Nov. 14. The McHenry fire depart; ment will hold another benefit dance at Stoffel's hall, West McHenry, on Thanksgiving eve. The Paradise Night Owls, the orchestra which has become so popular in McHenry, has been engaged for the evening. Come to the basket social at the Lily Lake school Saturday evening, Nov. 21. Bus will leave Bolger's Drug Store at 7:45. A special treat is in store for those who attend the Empire theatre Nov. 28 and 29. The vaudeville consists of Eddy and Mae Coe in "Don't Call Me Pop," Mae Coe, alias Mae Kessler, is well known in McHenry, having lived here for a good many years. An art exhibition of 200 pictures to be shown at the Community high school, Nov. 20 and 21. In this collection are to be found pictures depicting the life, beliefs and ideals of all peoples from the days of an cient Greece to our own day and generation. Joe Frett, Frank Freund and Joe Thelen returned home Monday after spending a few days at the Illinois River hunting game. States Attorney Alfred H. Pouse and family will move to Woodstock the first of December. Mr. Pouse has purchased the J.P. Alt home on Jackson street. FORTY YEARSAGO^ (Taken from the files of Nov. 21,1935) Last week we introduced our readers to Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Seyfferth of Lily Lake, who have been our neighbors for thirty-five years. Today we want to tell you something about their home, probably the most unique spot in this part of the country where souvenirs, relics and antiques abound and range all the way from an old style horse drawn hearse and a Chicago fire engine to an elaborate Indian collection and a Stradivarius violin. The house has been enlarged and im proved until it is one of the show places at the lake with its elaborate fountain, porticoes, images of lions and other sculpture work done by the owner. A milk meeting will be held at the McHenry high school, Friday evening, Nov. 22, at which time Judge Edward D. Shurtleff will explain in detail, "What To Do With Your Milk." The Boy Scouts of McHenry troop went to Chicago Sunday where they saw the Bears and Giants play professional football. The adults who ac companied the boys including those who drove cars were C.J. Reihansperger, Dr. G.W. Hess, Dr. C.W. Klontz, Supt. C.H. Duker, ML. Schoenholtz, Scoutmaster, and Bruce Granger. About thirty young people were guests of Rev. and Mrs. R.W. Pinell at the M.E. par sonage Sunday evening when an Epworth Leaque was organized. The first meeting of the Study club for the season was held at the high school Wednesday evening. Mrs. E.M. Phillips of Woodstock reviewed four books, included in the list being, "The Pumpkin Coach", "Living With Father", and H.G. Wells Autobiography. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Nov. 30,1950) The community was sad dened Sunday evening, Nov. 26, to learn of the passing of Math M. Blake in Victory Memorial hospital, Waukegan, where he had undergone surgery a week previous. His was the first death among the seven boys in his family. Richard Eugene Heuser, 20, son of Mrs. Helen Heuser of Main street, was enlisted in the U.S. Navy on Nov. 20, as an airman recruit and is now undergoing training at the U.S. Naval Training Center, Great Lakes. The outbreak of measles is particularly evident in one of the lower grades at St. Mary's- St. Patrick's school. The Christmas Savings club at the McHenry State bank is becoming increasingly popular each year. Checks amounting to approximately $50,000 representing the savings of over 400 club members were distributed last week. Miss Joann Young, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Louis J. Young of McHenry, became the bride of Mr. Fredric Sandeen, Jr., son of the senior Sandeens of Kasson, Minn. Rev. Fr. Garrity officiated at the service in St. Anastasia church, Waukegan, Saturday morning, Nov. 25. Two football players on the McHenry Warrior team were selected this week for positions on the Swani All Star first team by the various coaches in the league. Don Freund, out standing performer, won a spot in the select backfield. John Knox who stood out in McHenry's lineplay was honored with a guard position. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Nov. 24,1965) The election held in the Lakeland Park community house on Nov. 20 would indicate that the residents of the Lakeland Park and Lakeland Shores subdivision are in favor of annexation to the city of McHenry. The final vote was, 376 in favor and 73 against. United cerebral palsy of McHenry county, at their annual meeting held last week in McHenry paid special honor to Mrs. Dorothy E. Miller of McHenry who was the organization's president for six years. A surprise open house in honor of Mr. and Mrs. Martin J. Stoffel on the occasion of their fortieth wedding anniversary was held at the K of C hall Sunday, Nov. 21. The Stoffels have lived on John street since 1942. Victor Nowicki, son of Mr. and Mrs. C. Nowicki, who is in the army in Wiesbaden, Ger many, plays with the armed Forces Intercontinental football league. They won the conference championship by defeating Frankford, 24-14 and remain undefeated. As the McHenry Choral club marks its twenty-fifth year, these ten people have memories of participating in concerts covering ten years or longer. Bell service representative in McHenry, celebrates twenty- five years service with the company Friday, Nov. 28. Mrs. Haubold began her quarter of a century telephone career in Chicago as an operator. She held various positions in the company's operator services department in Wilmette, McHenry and Woodstock and was promoted to her present post here in 1961. Mrs. Haubold is a member of the Sinnissippi council, Telephone Pioneers of America, the world's largest i n d u s t r i a l e m p l o y e e organization dedicated to community service. She and her husband, Fred, live at 5811 North Fox Lake road. They have two daughters, Mrs. Karen Cooper of Rockford and Mrs. Garda Witt, Wonder Lake. Loy as the qew Air Force representative for McHenry county. Sergeant Loy, a native of Shelbyville, Ind., entered the Air Force in 1968 and has worked as a weapons main tenance specialist as well as a training technician prior to his assignment to the Air Force Recruiting service. He recently graduated from the six week recruiting course held at Lackland AFB, Texas. According to Sgt. Loy, his office will be located in the Crystal Lake Plaza and should open up in mid-December. Until then he may be reached at the DesPlaines Recruiting station, located at 800 Lee street, telephone number 312- 824-4446. Sgt. Loy is married to the former Phyllis I. Bennett, also of Shelbyville, Indiana. The couple has two children, Todd, 6, and Jennifer, 10 months. Senior Council To See "Christmas Around The World" Because of the tremendous response to the Ice Follies, the McHenry County Senior Citizen's council is planning an outing to the Museum of Science and industry. Marge Jones, executive director for the council, said, "For the past thirty-three years the Museum has had a festival called 'Christmas Around the World'. Music, dancing, costumes, food and decorations are featured from the styles of many lands." The date is Saturday, Dec. 6 at the Museum of Science and Industry.
