Matt failed in the pin attempt, but won the match on a lopsided decision in the 112 weight class. McHenry lost the meet to a tough Elgin-Larkin team by a 30-24 score. I (STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD) "EARL WALSH So I Hear Watching the Chicago Bears get clobbered again is too much so let's see what can be done £bout our own problem of putting a column together. ^ While watching the Bears we picked up the sports page and read about Notre Dame having a poor season. Of course, they won 8 games, but losing 3 was Unpardonable in the minds of those expecting the team to win every game every year. r Many teams are expected to have perfect seasons in foot ball. Not so in other sports. An 8-3 record for our Warriors Jvould suit us just fine. * A note from Frank Repp, Crystal Lake, tells that McHenry is leading the field in Inquiries for tickets to watch the famous Globetrotters Sunday, Dec. 21 in the Crystal Lake High School Fieldhouse. * Naturally! McHenry is the grestest sports town in Northern Illinois. < To each his own. ' Now comes a complaint that this sports page does not carry Player of the week! WRESTLER /1 - DON FREUND Don had the 1st fall of the season and it was a quick one in the 2nd period in the Warrior match against Elgin* Larkin. Don is an aggressive wrestler and should have a fine season. "The Wednesday Bank" THE FIRST NATIONAL BANK OF McHENRY 3814 W. Must do something about that. Wouldn't know what the big attraction is at Overton's, but famous athletes seem to find their way there. Had a call from Bob O'Neil recently asking if we would like to meet Oscar Robertson--the "Big O" --of basketball. Sure we would. The big fellow looks to be in shape to play right now, but has other irons in the fire such as broadcasting games and operating a construction business in Cincinnati. After a short visit, we rate "Big O" as a fine fellow. Each year we pause at Thanksgiving time to con template. This year WE ARE THANKFUL FOR dreary days. They make us appreciate the sun shine. Warriors In Season Opener At King Korn Vs. Big West Aurora Team By Dick Rabbitt Coach Ken Ludwig will take his "Fighting Warriors" to Sycamore this afternoon where they meet West Aurora at 3:00 P.M. in the King Korn Tour nament. Last year West Aurora defeated the Warriors 70 to 50 in the semi-finals of the tourney, and went on to win the big trophy. They have to be tabbed the favorites again this year. Coach John McDougal. has two returning regulars back from last season's 23 and 4 ball club. The Blackhawks are led by Ron Hicks a 6'6" 225 lb. center, and 6'4" forward-guard Jay Bryant. The Blackhawks are big, in addition to Hicks and Bryant, they list 6'8" sophomore Bruce Johnson, 6'6" Craig Logan, 6'5" Randy Schultz, and a couple of little men 6'0" Joe Michels and 6'2" Larry Hatchett. One thing for certain, the Warriors wtll be giving away a lot of height but Coach Ludwig hopes he can compensate it with speed and accuracy at the hoop. Likewise the Warriors won 23 ball games last season, and will be looking forward to another f H A T r e t i r e m e n t h a s silenced our alarm clock. At this time Coach Ludwig was undecided on the other two spots, but you can bet he will find the right combination. If the Warriors win, they will play at 1:00 P.M. tomorrow, and if by chance they should get beat will play at 9:30 A.M. tomorrow morning. BEING AN ORDAINED MINISTER. The ques tion is being asked, natu rally . enough, if Starr is too nice a guy to win. The answer to that won't be evident for a year or two and it's also true that the material available deter mines a team's record more t h a n a c o a c h ' s a b i l i t y . Starr didn't start with much. But those who attempt to argue that a manager in baseball or a coach have very little influence are rationalizing. So much of both baseball and football is psychology that a tal ented manager or coach can and does often achieve wonders. Some feel psychology is as much as forty per cent of winning. The right man ger or coach who knows his players can win, who gives them the leadership, strategy and spirit to win, plays a big part in build ing a winner, despite dis claimers.
