On The Sidelines by Dick Rabbitt One of the nice things about our young athletes at McHenry High School is that they have a way of showing their appreciation for what is being done for them. At the Cross Country Banquet last week the squad came up with a bit of a surprise. Andy Oakley and Eon Himplemann gave out some special awards. To each of theCrosscountry Girls, SherriBauer, Betsey Duel, Cathy Alexyak, Michele Peterson, Mary Wynveen, Mary Jurczynski, Sue Prust, Mary Goetschel, Sandy Peterson, Lynn Bauer, and Jan Owens was awarded a small trophy with the figure of a cross country runner. It was not a joke or lark. It was given with sincere appreciation for all the time and effort these girls put into the past season. To top it all off, they presented desk sets to Coaches Hutchinson and Kyle. To the squad it probably meant very little, but to me and I'm sure to the parents present, it made us feel a little more proud of our young people of McHenry High School. Have to put the blame on Coach Bill Day for the crack in the crystal ball. He steered me off Metamora and told me Geneva would win. I quess he was loyal to his old conference, the Little Seven. Anyway four out of five is a pretty good average. I can't understand why two people at West Campus are always ducking out of my way this past week. Griffin tried, but were simply outclassed by J diet Catholic, and Boylan put up a whale of a game against Deerfield. That is football for this year, and now we begin the long winter season. Am waiting to hear from Dave Miheva and his Ouija board for the coming basketball season. Last year he picked Zion right on the nose with a record of 13 and o. However, he missed out on the Warriors. Picked them for a 9 and 4 finish, and they wound up 12 and 1. I'm sure Dave is giving it much thought for the coming season, and we should have his selections in the near future. The "Rassling Warriors" put up a good fight the other night against Elgin Larkin, but just couldn't come up with a victory. The Upper Gym at West Campus was packed, and people were standing around the edge of the mats. If the Warriors continue with their desire and hustle the crowds could become larger and larger. Don't forget the Double Dual meet here tomorrow with Rockford Jefferson, Round Lake, and Geneva along with the Warriors. Time is 1:00 P.M. The basketball Warriors will have their hands full this afternoon against West Aurora. In looking over the Blackhawk team, the smallest man listed is 6'0". They have three 6'6" boys plus a 6'8", along with the usual 6'4" and 6'5" boys. Has to be one of the tallest teams in the state. But don't sell our Warriors short. They have played bigger teams before and beat them, and it would be nice to start the season with a win over one of the better teams in the Chicago area.
