Don't know their professional name, but a group of blue jean, suspendered girls put on an interesting routine at half time. The cheering section came out loud and strong with "We Want Rabbitt" in the closing minutes of the game. He finally led a cheer and won the game. (Never a doubt)> Some things looked familiar. The visiting coach helped the referee so much that he finally had a technical foul called against his team. It happens in college and in the pro ranks. Notre Dame's coach got the call for his ac tions in the Indiana game. He probably wasn't saying, "Nice going, ref". Sometimes a coach can get his team fired up by getting into a setto with the officials. And, sometimes they lose a close game through their ac tions. Have seen baseball managers get the ole heave-ho and wondered if they didn't bring it on so they could get out of the hot sun. Way back in the days when we scored games at the of ficials' table, we listened to a one-sided, young assistant coach until our patience ran out. Asked the young guy if he was a coach. Yep. It was when w^asked him if he taught sportsmanship that he clammed up and didn't speak to us the rest of the night. We don't always agree with officials on calls, but never had any desire to take their jobs. The season is too young for us to predict where our Warriors are going in the North Suburban race. It is evident that a couple of lanky fellows are helping the team this year. Brian Lund, who lost a year because of an injury, and Doug Hertel made us sit up and take notice. Also noted that Brett Decker, a husky fellow, has had some of the rough edges worn off since last season. He's strong under the boards. The team seemed to jell against Antioch Saturday night and rolled merrily on to vic tory. It was a real shock to hear of Joe Conerty's death. He left this earth much too young. Joe was a good Christian man with great concern for his family. He was also a darned Warriors Defeat Cardinals 61-57 By Dick Rabbitt The sputtering McHenry High Warriors of Coach Ken Ludwig hung on to win another North Suburban conference game Friday night when they defeated the Dundee Cards 61 to 57. Inability to make free throws almost cost the Warriors the game. They made 5, while the Cards were con verting 23. The Warriors out- scored the Cards from the field 28 to 17. The Warriors started out like gangbusters rolling up a 21 to 14 first quarter margin. Koerber, Ludwig, Lund and Decker all getting field goals for the Warriors. The Cards fought back and Miller's basket at the buzzer put the Cards ahead at halftime 36 to 35. The third period was error filled basketball. Both teams em ployed a pressing defense, resulting in many turnovers for each team. The Warriors however regained the lead by the score of 45 to 44. With the second tied at 45 all and 6:15 remaining a big second effort by Doug Hertel on a rebound put the Warriors ahead to stay 47 to 45. With 2:08 remaining' Terry Reilly's three point play gave the Warriors the spurt they needed and Brian Lund's basket with 30 seconds left put the icing on the cake. Coach Ludwig thought the Warriors were fortunate to win the game. He commented "I like to win and be lucky". All of those at the game Friday night will agree with him. It was nice to win, but it was a lucky win for the Warriors. Tommy Hutchinson at 167 had the only pin for the Warriors. The sophomores also won 29 to 23. The soph match was tied coming up to the heavyweight match, but Grayslake had to forfeit that weight and the young Warriors won the match. Noisy people wonder why anyone desires to be quiet. GO AHEAD AND SHOOT-the ever hustling Warriors held their positions as a Dundee player attempted to make a long shot. McHenry, ahead by 4 points at this moment, with seconds remaining, were giving the visitors a welcome to the basket in order to prevent a possible foul. The formation proved successful as Dundee failed to score and the Warriors won 61-57 to remain SPORTS EDITOR-] undefeated in conference play with a 2 and 0 record. The Warriors are 1-r Tony Christy, Brian Lund, Brett Decker, Terry Reilly and D6n Rode. The weekend wins over Dundee and Antioch increased the Warrior overall record to 6-1. Friday night the McHenry cagers travel to Crystal Lake for a conference game. (STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD) THE FAST BREAK-of the Warriors gave the Sequoits a tiring time as McHenry moved the ball to pull away from a 2 point half time lead to a 17 point victory. The ball handler above is Terry Reilly as he speeds down court during the fourth period action. Terry scored 13 points In last Saturday night's win. (STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD) Warriors Rout Antioch 74-57 By Dick Rabbitt The Antioch Sequoits stepped out of their class Saturday night and as a result were defeated by the McHenry Warriors 74 to 57. The Warriors started out like they did Friday night grabbing- a 14 to 4 first quarter lead. Then as the previous night they had a big letdown in the second period, but managed to go off at halftime with a 30 to 28 lead. Antioch failing to get on the floor in time for the second half, resulted in a technical fouhand Reilly's free throw put the Warriors ahead 31 to 28. Seconds later Koerber made a basket, and the Warriors came to life. Playing like the Warriors of old, they rebounded, they shot, they made baskets, and their defense was plain awesome to the Sequoits. Time after time the Sequoits turned the ball over to the Warriors, and the Warrior fast break began to work like a clock. With the big fellow Steve Koerber, Brian Lund, Hertel and Terry Reilly all firing away the Warriors for the first time this season began to look like a real basketball team. The rebounding of Bifett Decker and tjie quarterbacking of Tommy Ludwig added to the fine shooting resulting in the big win over an old rival An tioch. For the second night in a row the improved play of Brian Lund and Doug Hertel played a big part in the Warrior win. I'm sure that Coach Dick Starkey of Mundelein who was at the game was sorry to see Doug Hertel move to McHenry after Saturday night. Koerber got his eye back on target and led the scoring with 21 pts. Lund, Reilly and Hertel were also in double figures for the Warriors. The Warriors seemed to have it all put together in the second half. Let's hope they continue to play that same brand of ball. A conference championship and another trip to the sectional in Rockford is still possible. The other fellow's reaction was, "I suppose that (deleted) Earl Walsh is happy now." Happy is no word for it. It wasn't just for Bill Veeck's sake. We Sox fans didn't want our team playing in Seattle. It would be almost as sad to see the Cubs moved out. What fun could we have? You may be sure there will be action galore in Sox Park this coming season. Veeck is a promoter. He should have lived in the days when horse trading was an art. into this new jewelry style for men. Went to see our Warriors in their first home game Friday night. Experts led us to believe it would be a breeze for McHenry. Huh! The visiting Cardunals came within an inch of beating our team. And once again it was free throws that kept them in the game. They made 'em. Our boys missed 'em.
