X PAGE 1 - PUUNDEALER-FRIDAY. I On the Sidelines by Dick RabbiN Coach Marty Sobczak will take his "Rassling Wanriors' tonight to the Harvard Invitational. The tourney will continue all thru tomorrow. The sixteen team affair is fast becoming one of the top wrestling events in the state. Some of the better teams in the northern part of the state will participate. At least one of the Chicago city schools will be entered. Matt Schuster with a 7 and 0 record will lead the Warriors into battle. This 112 lb. fellow is as tough as they come. Brian Nuss with a record of 3 wins 1 loss and a tie is another fixture in Coach Sobczak plans. Tommy Hutchinson will enter the tourney with a 5 and 1 record at 167 lbs., and Mike Mai with a 4 and 0 record. Bill.Rowe also has a 4 and 0 record. Jeff Hurckes has been wrestling at the J. V. level and likewise is 4 and 0 for the season. It will be a long night and day for the Warriors but I'm sure they appreciate the opportunity to go against good competition. _ We are hoping for a few individual champions and a team trophy. It would be just the tonic the grapplers need for the coming year. McHenry High School will host the American Legion Junior High basketball tournament at West Campus on January 2nd and 3rd. It is an annual tourney sponsored by the Legion for the feeder schools into McHenry High. McHenry Junior High, Parkland, Johnsburg Junior High, St. John's, Harrison and Montiniwill be the teams. Mike Shanahan's "Water Warriors" are off to a fine start, with a record of 3 and 1. Senior Bruce Fetzer is undefeated in both the 200 and 500 yd. freestyle. Lowell Kivley is also undefeated in the diving. The Warriors are again entered in the Kankakee Holiday Tournament. They pair off against Hinsdale South at 12:30 p.m. on Monday Dec. 29th. The Warriors have finished in the runnerup spot twice in the past three years. Three years ago they lost to Bradley in double overtime, and last year lost to a fine Peoria Central team 54 to 49 in the finals. They will have their work cut out for them this year if they intend to reach the finals. Lying in wait if the Warriors should win their first two games will either be Marian Catholic from Chicago Heights, one of the top ranked teams in tjie Chicago area, or Willowbrook High School another powerhouse. If the Warriors yin their first game they will play the winner of the Morris-Kankakee Westview game at 7:30 P.M. on Tuesday night. The finals are scheduled for New Years Eve. With football bowl games and all the other activities that take place on this night, I am wondering if the Kankakee schools made a wise choice for the night of the finals. The Warriorsrfinally put it all together in the second half against Antioch. If they continue to play in the same manner, future opponents better take heed. The fine play of the Warrior bench must be mentioned. Doug Hertel came off the bench in both games last weekend and played like a demon. His fine work won him the Player of the Week Award. Tony Christy proved that he could come in and relieve one of the guards and not hurt the Warrior attack. He didn't have a single turnover in both games, and that in itself is remarkable considering the caliber of play in the games. Brian Miller and Billy Hurckes also showed that they are re?dy at a moments notice to get the nod from Coach Ludwig. The starting five is coming along in fine shape. The big fellow "Steve Koerber" is looking like the Kerb of old. His rebounding has been outstanding. Brian Lund shows great improvement in every game, if only he could stay out of foul trouble. Brett Decker is using his strength to keep the big opponents away from the basket, and Terry Reilly although not hitting the baskets as often, has shown great ability in his passing game. The quarterback of the team, Tom Ludwig, is great against the press. Putting this all together makes the Warriors a serious contender for the North Suburban Conference title. Sic Henry is starting a chapter of THE FELLOWSHIP OF CHRISTIAN ATHLETES. The group meets the 1st and 3rd Mondays of every month at West Campus at 7:00 P.M. Everyone is invited to attend. This is an organization that is spreading fast on both college and high school campuses. It is a worthwhile organization, and the local group would like to see more interested people. 1 (1975) 26th ANNUAL KANKAKEE HOLIDAY TOURNEY Marian Catholic , (10) 9:00 a.m. Willowbrook (9) 9:00 a.m. Waukegan West (13) 4:00 p.m. (17) 9:00 a.m. (5) 4:00 p.m. McNamara Hinsdale South 12:30 p.m. (19) (3) 12:30 P.M. On Monday, December 8 the girls played Avon in two very exciting games. In the 7th grade game Avon took the lead immediately and held it through the first half when the score was 8-5. But the Montini girls came alive in the third quarter and brought the score to 13-12 in favor of Montini. They cinched the game ih the 4th quarter by allowing Avon to take only 1 shot for the basket which was unsuccessful while scoring 8 points themselves. Linda Aim scored 6 points, Jackie Weber and Karen Truckenbrod 4 each. In the 8th grade game the score was tie 6-6- at the end of the first quarter but Avon outscored us in the 2nd quarter bringing the halftime score to 14-8. In the 3rd quarter Montini played hard and gained 4 more points than Avon, but Avon proved to have too strong a defense and won 33-28. Debbie Herdrich played an outstanding defensive game while Sue Butler scored 12 points for Montini. Carrie Freund, Mari Nett and Debbie Herdrich played well on of fense. On Wednesday, Dec. 10 the teams traveled to Barrington to Choral Group Will Present "The Messiah" The Harvard Choral society will present Handel's "Messiah" at 8 p.m. Sunday evening, Dec. 28, in the First United Methodist church of Harvard. The choral group this year will be accompanied by a six- piece orchestra ensemble from members of the Rockford Symphony orchestra and Mrs. Joann Carbonetti of Harvard as organist. • - ' Family Treed "Sir, I'll have you un derstand I'm related to the Boones." The 7th grade started the game with a basket by Karen Truckenbrod and fought hard to keep the lead all through the game. We worked extra hard on defense in preparing for this game and it paid off as Karen Trucken brod and Cindy Tonyan led the team in a great effort involving all members that kept the Avon scoring down to 14 points. Linda Aim led the offense by contributing 10 points to the final score of 24-14. This puts the 7th grade team in a tie for first place with Countryside. This will be played off on Thursday night at Fox River Grove at 7:00. The 8th grade tried hard but couldn't beat Countryside. Carol Herrmann led in defense with good support from Cindy Knox and Sue Butler. Carol scored 6 points while Cindy scored 4 leading to a final score of 39-19 in favor of Countryside. On Friday, Dec. 12 a non- conference game was played at r Montini Middle School The Montini 7th and 8th grade Basketball teams lost their first games of the season yesterday to St. Francis de Sales of Lake Zurich. The 7th grade lost 54-28. Tom Sharp scored 12 points to lead Montini, while Sean Haley and Jeff Justen each had 6. and kept our scoring down to a minimum. Kathy Sabatka, Linda Aim, Judy Snyder, Jackie Weber and Cindy Tonyan each made a basket while Sue Dixon .made 2 giving Montini 16 points. Our defense led by Cindy Tonyan's out standing play held Johnsburg to 11 points giving us the vic tory 16-11. Debbie Herdrich led the defense for our 8th grade team. She managed to keep John sburg's top scorer Dawn Bentz from scoring any points after the 1st quarter. Johnsburg also had a strong defense and although Cindy Knox, Carol Herrmann, Mary Foley, Sue Butler and Debbie Herdrich all scored for Montini we lost 28-10. Johnsburg Jr. high. The 7th grade Johnsburg team played an excellent defensive game The 8th graders lost 51-33 despite a fine 15 point per formance by Tim Sabatka, and 8 by Ron Waytula. Sabatka was the leading rebounder with 8, and Dwight Schmitt had 5. Both teams played well despite the scores, and should provide the school with winning records.
