PAGE 7 - PLAINDEALER - FRIDAY, APRIL 22,1977 On The Sidelines by Dick Bobbin Congratulations are in order to our good friend Bill Blankenhorn, the Athletic director at McHenry high school. Bill was chosen his fellow A.D.'s as the outstanding man in his job for District 6. This area covers McHenry, Boone, Winnebago, DeKalb, Stephenson and Jo Daviess counties. That in itself is quite an accomplishment, but to top that, he was runnerup in the state to Harvey Dickinson retiring A.D. at Hinsdale Central high school. Mr. Dickinson in turn was named the outstanding high school Athletic director in the nation by a vote of 3,000 of his fellow A.D.'s. It is quite an honor indeed for Bill to be selected for such an honor, and to be runnerup to such a man as Harvey Dickinson, already proves what most of us know at McHenry high, that Bill is quite a guy, and a dependable Athletic director. « One cannot imagine what an A.D. goes through during the spring sport schedule. Cancellation of games, notifying officials, checking busses, rescheduling of games, and many more little details. His presence is seen at almost every home athletic event, and I would be afraid to count the number. He will challenge my next statement, but I will say it anyway. "Bill is the hardest working A.D. in the North Suburban, and from the vote of his friends maybe in the entire state. The honor bestowed on Bill couldn't happen to a finer gentleman. With summer taking the place of spring a lot of events are about to take place at McHenry high school. The 12th Annual Relays will be held next Friday night, and the Warriors are the defending champions. This year could be a toss-up among several teams. Kaneland is not as powerful as it has been in the past years. St. Charles, Wheaton-Warrenville, Lake Forest, and Hoffman Estates along with the Warriors all could be in contention for the trophy. Looks like it will be quite a meet, so plan on coming out and seeing a real track meet. Tomorrow the Frosh-Soph Invitational tennis meet will be heia at West campus. There will be eight teams competing for the title. It is one of the better tournaments for underclassmen in this part of the state. On May 13 and 14 the Warriors will host the North Suburban Conference tennis meet. This should be a real knockout, with Barrington, Lake Forest, Crystal Lake and our Warriors all competing forthe title. Barrington is now 10 and 0 and is considered one of the state's best tennis teams. The girls get into the act also, on May 9-11 they will host the sub-regional softball tourney for the state. And for too many years to remember McHenry will again host the boys District baseball tourney. With the facilities at McCracken field, as the best playing field in the area, the state naturally picks the Warriors as host to this tournament. The baseball fields and track are in excellent shape as usual, and again Tom "Twig" Miller and his able assistant Kevin Shea have done an outstanding job. Jim Lenzini of Libertyville threw the discus the other day 181*11" to break the existing state mark. However, it is not a state record, as all state records must come in the state meet, which is held later in the year. He has already thrown the shot over 61', and it is very possible that he could win both in the state. Local fans will have the opportunity to see him compete in the North Suburban Conference meet at Crystal Lake later in the season. A final note: Greg Boyle, Mundelein's fine basketball guard, has chosen to attend the University of Iowa. Iowa won over Illinois in the race for this fine basketball player. 12th Annual McHeniy Relays On April 29 McHENRY RECREATION Ladies Tues. A total of 64,000 children have registered in the MS Read-a- thon sponsored by the Chicago chapter, National Multiple Sclerosis society, according to Ernie Banks, Read-a-thon chairman. If the Chicago area conforms to national MS Read-a-thon statistics, the children will complete an average of ten books during the four-week reading period. Banks predicts that at least fifty percent or 32,000 children will finish the local program for a total of 320,000 books read for the benefit of MS. Like other marathons, the MS Read-a-thon requires ob taining sponsors for the activity to be completed. Sponsors pledge a specific amount of money to be donated to MS for each book read by a child enrolled. April 29 is the deadline for turning in kits to the Chicago MS chapter office, although a five-day grace period has been necessarily established due to the unanticipated over whelming response to the program. All children observing the deadline will become eligible for hundreds of prizes donated for random drawings. These include a ten-speed bicycle, two footballs autographed by the Chicago Bears, an en cyclopedia, transistor radios, and photos autographed by Lindsay Wagner, national MS Read-a-thon chairman and star of TV's "The Bionic Woman". Every child finishing the program will receive an MS Read-a-thon sew-on arm patch and a certificate along with an autographed picture from Ernie Banks and a 1977 Chicago Cubs schedule. Because multiple sclerosis, a disease of the central nervous system, usually is diagnosed in young adults between twenty and forty, it is of particular interest to Ernie Banks and other athletes who volunteer for MS because they un derstand what the weakening disease would mean to persons in this prime period of their lives. Banks will continue as MS R e a d - a - t h o n c h a i r m a n throughout the year. Schools unable to take part in the spring program are encouraged to schedule a Read-a-thon now for fall by writing the Chicago chapter, National Multiple ^Sclerosis society, 53 W. Jackson boulevard, Chicago, 60604. In McHenry county, 2,579 public school children and 1,545 parochial school children have signed up for the Read-a-thon. Disagreements and tolerance are the founda tion stones of the demo cratic way of life. . » » • • Can anyone remember when the taxpayer had nothing to pay but a small tax on his property? By Dick Rabbitt The McHenry high baseball Warriors, behind the three hit pitching of junior Bob Sharp, defeated Cary Grove last week 4 to 0. The slim righthander walked three and struck out 5 in gaining his second win of the season. The Warriors managed only 4 hits, but a walk and a costly error proved the downfall to the Trojan nine.
