LOST Vicinity of Johnsburg Rd. 385-2661 It's YOUR Money BY DONALD DALEY PRESIDENT FIRST NATIONAL BANK OF McHENRY •» f • w id - HOW TO RENT A SUMMER COTTAGE * Now s the time to start * looking for that dream cottage * in which youll spend your * summer vacation. Dreom or * nightmare? That depends on * how well you choose. * The cost depends on three fac- * tors: location, the number of - sleeping accommodations, . and the age and condition of 1 the house. At most lake and * ocean sites, the closer the * house is to the water, the , more it will cost. Summer cottages aren't measured in number of bedrooms, but in number of ' sleeping spaces. If sleeping on - a living room couch doesn't appeal to you, avoid the cot tage that counts that as a sleeping space -and charges - for it. Be wary of the cottage that offers too many accom [ modations in tob little space. Its age and condition have a - lot to do with how you will en- . joy your stay. How much creature comfort are you * willing to trade off for how much money? If you're renting directly from the owner, you MUST look before you rent. Otherwise, you've no recourse if you re miserable when you get there. Even if you're working through a reliable rental agent, prior inspection is a good idea. The best way to find a reliable rental agent is through word of mouth; a friend's good recommendation is the best advertisement. Otherwise, write or call the local Cham ber of Commerce and ask for a list of agents, or for three in the area with the most listings and widest price range. Now write or call the agents you've chosen and tell them what you need. They should respond with lists of availabilities, perhaps with photographs. Now call the agent who's sent you the best possible rentals and ask detailed questions. Ask about floor coverings (vinyl is smooth and easy to sweep), window screens (vital), appliances. A good rental agent should know the answers, or offer to get them. If you don't like the answers you get, call another agent. After all, it's YOUR vacation. Serving McHeniy & Greater McHenry County be sure to dress for summer weather Wear a hat to protect against sunstroke; sunglasses to prevent eye strain; light colors to keep you cool; fabrics that can "breathe"; light, but strong shoes; and don't forget safety clothing (gloves, heavy shoes, safety glasses, etc.) when working around your house and yard this summer. The summer months are a time of special enjoyment. Don't let an accident ruin your summer. If you want more information about summer safety, contact your local health department, or write to Illinois Department of Public Health, Consumer Product Safety Program, 535 West Jefferson, Springfield, Illr, 62761 By Mary Richards In spring, a young man's fancy may turn to thoughts of love, but for most of us. spring brings thoughts of summer...a time to enjoy the outdoors, relax on vacation, or simply look forward to a change in routine. - Summer is not without its own special hazards and dangers, however.. Each summer, thousands of Illinoisans are injured in ac cidents associated with the season One of the most hazardous places in summer, could be your own back yard. An at titude of "safety first", can help you and your family enjoy using your yard by lessening your chances of injury. Backyard pools are a com mon source of summer ac cidents. Be sure your pool is fenced off. and always supervise children. Pesticides used or stored improperly can cause poisoning. When cooking outdoors, always start your fire carefully.. observe fire precautions, and watch the fire at all times. Be sure that swings, slides and other such equipment are strong enough and in good repair. Hedge trimmers and power mowers can be extremely dangerous if not used with caution. When using this type of equipment, keep children away. Be sure that electric cords used outdoors are heavy duty, moisture resistant and grounded. Yard tools, such as rakes, can cause trips and falls if left lying about the-yard. Trash and litter can also cause trips and falls, as well as fires. Never leave unsealed con tainers of gasoline, paint solvents, etc., standing around. They can cause fires, and are poisonous if swallowed or inhaled. When spending prolonged periods of time in the outdoors. Labor Pains Recent statistics reveal that if an Anencan woman quits her job to look for another she'll probably be out of work ten weeks If she's fired or laid off it averages out to twenty-seven weeks before she's back to a job.
