Fun boxes for boxed-in! As every kid knows, some summer days can be a drag! There are those 1-o-o-n-g, cooped-up rainy afternoons, or those hangdog days of waiting for something -- anything! -- to happen. And as every parent knows, this is wall-climbing time. But there's one way to break the boredom: in stigate a little creative play. Bring out scissors and glue, colored paper, paint, and assorted bits and pieces. And when the child asks, "What shall I make?," you come up with a dynamite idea: "Make a box-scene." The idea of creating a miniature world in a box is fascinating to grown-up art ists and youngsters alike. American artist Joseph Cor nell is famous for his mys terious boxes with their ar rangements of old maps and playing cards, dolls, and other discarded treasures. For small fry, too, a box is a good place in which to build a dream world. In fact, "box-scenes" won the two top prizes in Elmer's National Glue-Craft Con test last year. A diorama of Washington crossing the Delaware won first prize for 8-year-old Paul Miller of Miami, Florida. In a deep box, he built up a snowy landscape with papier machl (newspaper strips soaked in glue), then glued in twigs for trees, cotton for clouds, a broken mirror for the icy river and a boatload of toy soldiers. Amy Schwendimann, 10, of Richardson, Texas turned a cigar box into Betsy Ross' cottage, with popsicle sticks for "log" walls, fabric and wallpaper scraps, furniture and clothespin people. With a grocery carton or other reasonably sturdy box, plus trusty Elmer's Glue-All, almost anything is possible. Your youngsters might cre ate a fantastic planet with craters of sand and a foil spaceship ... or make a jungle with real greenery and animals cut from maga zines and glued to card board. The box could even be a theatre for puppets! Once they start, the youngsters will know exact ly how to turn that box into a three-dimensional world where the imagination can play. And they may get so absorbed you can't get them out of the house! IPERFECT FORI MOTHERS M! H *251 COOKS TO THE EXACT DEGREE AUTOMATICALLY! • Cooks by temperature or time with this sensing probe.
